Apple Unveils M5 Ultra Mac Studio: Most Powerful Chip Ever Arrives
Apple has launched new Mac Studio models featuring the M5 Max and the M5 Ultra chips. The M5 Ultra boasts Apple's most powerful chip ever, promising significant boosts in AI compute and graphics performance.

Apple is upgrading its high-end Mac Studio desktop line with its latest silicon, introducing models equipped with the M5 Max and the brand-new M5 Ultra chips. This consolidation under a single chip generation arrives more than a year after the previous Studio generation saw a split between the M5 Max and the M3 Ultra. The new Mac Studio desktops maintain the same compact form factor and external design since their 2022 debut, including the familiar USB-A ports on the rear. However, the internal components now house Apple's most potent system-on-a-chip (SoC) designs to date.
The new Mac Studio configured with the M5 Max chip comes standard with 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage, with a starting price of $2,499. This price point mirrors the current starting cost of the previous M5 Max model following a price adjustment earlier this year. For those seeking peak performance, the M5 Ultra model begins at $5,499, featuring 96GB of memory and 1TB of storage. This represents only a $200 increase over the initial price of the outgoing M3 Ultra model, which itself launched at a more accessible $3,999 last year.
These updated Mac Studios are slated to ship with macOS 27 Golden Gate and are expected to arrive on September 22nd, coinciding with the release of new Mac Minis. A high-end configuration of the M5 Ultra, boasting a substantial 512GB of memory, is scheduled for a late October release, with pricing yet to be announced but expected to be considerable.
Enhanced Performance and Architecture
While these updates represent significant chip enhancements, the new Mac Studios deliver notable improvements. Both the M5 Max and M5 Ultra models offer storage speeds that are double that of their predecessors, aligning with recent advancements seen in Apple's MacBook lineup. Apple highlighted the M5 Ultra's capabilities in its press release, stating it represents "A monumental step for AI," with claims of up to 4.3 times faster AI compute performance. Even in terms of traditional CPU and GPU capabilities, the M5 Ultra, featuring an up to 36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, is reported to deliver up to 1.8x faster graphics and 1.3x faster CPU speeds compared to the M3 Ultra. The memory bandwidth on the M5 Ultra reaches up to 1.2TB per second, a significant leap from the M3 Ultra's 819GB per second.
This performance leap is attributed to Apple's next-generation UltraFusion interconnect, which effectively merges two dual-die M5 Max chips into a quad-die architecture. This innovative approach is the foundation for Apple's assertion that the M5 Ultra is "the most powerful chip ever." Beyond the core processing power, the new Mac Studios also incorporate an upgrade for everyday usability: support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
With the recent discontinuation of its Mac Pro desktop line, the Mac Studio models now represent the pinnacle of Apple's desktop computing power. Their compact design allows them to fit discreetly under a monitor, and they are capable of driving up to four of Apple's 5K/120Hz Studio Display XDR monitors at their full native resolution. However, as advancements continue, Apple's most powerful chips and fastest Macs are accompanied by a significant increase in price compared to earlier generations, a trend sometimes referred to as 'RAMageddon' in enthusiast circles.
