Apple is reportedly preparing to launch a new device leasing program, dubbed "Apple Upgrade," that will offer consumers lease-to-own pricing for its popular hardware lines. The initiative, detailed by Bloomberg, aims to provide more flexible purchasing options, particularly as component costs continue to rise. The program is slated to roll out on July 28th, according to sources familiar with the plan.

Under the proposed "Apple Upgrade" program, customers would be able to lease new iPhones, Macs, iPads, and Apple Watches. This approach mirrors a car lease model, allowing users to upgrade to newer models partway through their lease term, or to purchase, return, or keep the device at the lease's conclusion. Financial services company Klarna is expected to back the program, which will require a soft credit check for eligibility.

The new leasing service will replace the existing iPhone Upgrade Program and standard financing options for iPhones. It is expected to encompass most new iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch purchases. Lease terms will vary by device: 24-month leases are anticipated for iPhones and Apple Watches, while iPads and Macs will likely feature 36-month lease options. However, budget-friendly devices such as the base iPad, the iPhone 16, the Apple Watch SE, and the fast-selling MacBook Neo are reportedly excluded from eligibility.

Shifting Financial Landscape

This move by Apple comes amid increasing hardware costs and a broader shift in consumer electronics toward flexible payment and ownership models. The tech giant has recently seen price increases across many of its product lines. While iPhones were not part of the most recent price hike, the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro series is anticipated to set a new benchmark for pricing later this year. The exclusion of AppleCare subscriptions from the new program is also a notable change, as the cost of AppleCare itself has been rising.

The "Apple Upgrade" program signals Apple's strategic response to market dynamics, potentially aiming to maintain sales volume despite escalating prices. By offering leasing, Apple can make its premium devices more accessible to a wider range of consumers who might be deterred by outright purchase costs or traditional financing. This strategy could also encourage more frequent device turnovers, aligning with Apple's product release cycles and fostering ongoing customer engagement with its ecosystem. The integration with a financial partner like Klarna suggests a streamlined and potentially competitive financing solution for consumers.

The introduction of the lease-to-own model is a significant departure from Apple's traditional direct sales approach for its hardware. While the company has offered upgrade programs before, this expanded lease structure for Macs and iPads, alongside iPhones and Apple Watches, represents a more comprehensive financial offering. The program's success will likely depend on the specific lease terms, upgrade flexibility, and how it is perceived by consumers in comparison to existing financing options and competitor offerings in the burgeoning device leasing market.
