ASUS has officially launched pre-orders for its highly anticipated ROG Ally X20, a premium handheld gaming PC celebrating the company's 20th anniversary. The device is set to launch on October 15, with a standalone model available for $1,299.99 MSRP and a fully loaded bundle priced at $2,499.99 MSRP. Both options can be pre-ordered starting today through Best Buy, with the ASUS Store accepting pre-orders from September 24.

While initially presented as a special commemorative edition, the ROG Ally X20 represents a significant mid-generation upgrade to the existing ROG Ally X. ASUS has implemented substantial improvements in hardware, display technology, thermal management, and control mechanisms, extending far beyond cosmetic changes. The most prominent enhancement is the display: the X20 features a larger 7.4-inch OLED panel, replacing the 7-inch screen of its predecessor. This upgrade significantly boosts visual quality with improved brightness and HDR performance, supporting 600 nits of SDR brightness and up to 1,400 nits peak HDR brightness, along with Dolby Vision and ASUS' ROG Nebula HDR technologies. A completely redesigned Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and repositioned motherboard, facilitated by new surface-mounted USB4 ports, create improved airflow and thermal efficiency within the chassis. The cooling system has also been upgraded with revised fan and heatsink designs. These thermal improvements are crucial for modern handheld gaming PCs, promising lower operating temperatures, quieter performance, and more consistent power delivery during extended play sessions.

The D-pad now features hybrid metal dome switches for a more tactile feel and a unique 'Transforming D-pad' mechanism that allows players to adjust its configuration for better diagonal input, a key feature for fighting games. The thumbsticks have been updated to TMR magnetic induction sticks, offering Hall-effect-like precision with reduced power consumption and a tighter dead zone of approximately 3%. Additionally, the RGB lighting around the sticks has been doubled, with four LEDs per joystick.

The X20 continues to be powered by the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory and a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD. It also maintains its 80Wh battery, USB4 connectivity with Thunderbolt compatibility, and Wi-Fi 6E support. This focus on enhancing user-facing features rather than merely chasing higher raw specifications indicates a strategic approach to improving the overall gaming experience.

A notable change in storage involves the removal of the traditional microSD card slot in favor of a microSD Express reader. This upgrade supports significantly faster transfer rates, with microSD Express cards capable of approaching 1 GB/s, bringing expandable storage performance closer to that of internal SSDs. As game sizes continue to increase, this enhanced speed for external storage could prove to be a valuable improvement.

For enthusiasts and collectors, ASUS offers a premium bundle priced at $2,499.99, which includes the handheld, ROG XREAL R1 Edition AR glasses, a dbrand Killswitch case with custom skin, joystick covers, a custom Pelican Protector Case, and a 68W charger. The inclusion of the ROG XREAL R1 Edition AR glasses, which offer a virtual 171-inch screen, significantly contributes to the bundle's price.
