Hohem Eyepic Merges Gimbal Camera and Action Cam

Hohem unveiled the Eyepic at IFA 2026 in Berlin this week, a device the company is marketing as the "world's first 2-in-1 pocket gimbal camera." This innovative gadget integrates a detachable camera with advanced three-axis stabilization, offering users the flexibility to operate it as a handheld gimbal for dynamic shots or as a wearable camera for effortless, hands-free recording. This move by Hohem follows their previous work on smartphone gimbals, like the iSteady V3 Ultra, and aims to consolidate imaging tools for content creators.

The Eyepic is constructed around a camera module that can be detached from its stabilizing gimbal. For handheld use, the camera remains attached, providing smooth, stabilized footage. When separated, the camera becomes a compact unit that can be worn using an included hat clip or lanyard, or attached to magnetic surfaces, opening up new creative perspectives for activities such as travel, cycling, and outdoor adventures. The camera boasts a waterproof rating of up to 10 meters (33 feet), making it suitable for underwater shots and use in wet conditions. Once detached, the gimbal retracts and locks. The handle itself can still function as a remote control, offering a 1080p live preview and camera setting adjustments from up to 33 feet away.

A standout feature of the Eyepic is its approach to vertical video. Instead of capturing horizontally and cropping, the camera physically rotates its lens to achieve native vertical framing. Meanwhile, devices such as the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 and Insta360 Luna Ultra integrate cameras with three-axis stabilization into single handheld units for solo creators and vloggers. Hohem's Eyepic attempts to merge these concepts, offering a modular design that caters to both action filming and stabilized vlogging needs. The company is also previewing new smartphone gimbals, the iSteady V4 Ultra and iSteady X4, featuring AI tracking and Apple DockKit compatibility. Additionally, Hohem introduced the Mic 2 wireless microphone system for multi-speaker audio recording, capable of pairing one receiver with up to four transmitters and offering a 300-meter wireless range.

The Eyepic's modularity represents a significant innovation. While dedicated action cameras prioritize ruggedness and extreme conditions, and pocket gimbals focus on integrated stabilization, the Eyepic offers the flexibility to switch between these roles seamlessly. A content creator could use it for a stable walking shot, detach the camera for hands-free footage during an activity, and then reattach it without needing a separate device. While its ultimate performance will depend on final specifications and its ability to compete with the sensor sizes and resolutions of premium cameras, the Eyepic presents a compelling proposition.
