iPhone 18 Pro Leaks: Satellite 5G, Variable Aperture Camera, A20 Chip Rumored

Apple is poised to unveil its latest iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, alongside its first-ever foldable iPhone, at its annual fall event on Wednesday, September 9. This year's event is themed "Surprise and shine." Ahead of the official announcement, details are emerging about potential upgrades including enhanced camera capabilities, a more powerful chip, and advanced connectivity options.

The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to retain the general design language of its predecessors, though rumors suggest a more refined construction with a smoother integration between the glass and aluminum frame. The iPhone 18 Pro Max, in particular, is rumored to sport a larger battery, potentially between 5,100 and 5,200 mAh, which may result in a slightly thicker and heavier device. A notable design change could be a smaller Dynamic Island, achieved by relocating some Face ID components beneath the display.

Display technology is also set for an upgrade, with the Pro models reportedly adopting a more power-efficient LTPO+ panel, sourced from industry leaders Samsung Display and LG Display. Under the hood, the devices are anticipated to be powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip. This next-generation silicon is expected to be manufactured using TSMC's advanced 2nm process, incorporating Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) technology to boost performance and energy efficiency.

Camera and Connectivity Upgrades Highlighted

Significant advancements are expected in the camera system. Samsung is reportedly supplying a new three-layer stacked image sensor for the iPhone 18 Pro series, designed to enhance responsiveness and reduce noise while improving dynamic range. Both iPhone 18 Pro models are anticipated to feature a variable aperture on their 48-megapixel Fusion cameras, offering users greater control over light intake and depth of field.

Connectivity could also see a major leap, with speculation that the iPhone 18 Pro models will support full 5G satellite internet. This would expand upon Apple's existing satellite features, moving beyond emergency services to potentially offer broader connectivity options. The new Apple C2 modem, developed in-house, is also a candidate for inclusion, promising faster speeds and better efficiency. However, there is a possibility that the C2 modem might still lack mmWave capability, leading Apple to utilize Qualcomm modems in the United States while deploying its own C2 chip elsewhere.

Further camera refinements include a redesigned Camera Control button, moving to a pressure-sensing mechanism without a separate capacitive layer. This simplification aims to reduce manufacturing complexity and cost. Apple has also tested several new color finishes, with Light Blue, Dark Cherry, and Silver being strong contenders, potentially replacing the traditional Black option.

The iPhone 18 Pro series will launch with iOS 27, which is expected to feature a significantly upgraded Siri powered by advanced Apple Intelligence. This enhanced Siri will reportedly understand onscreen context, leverage personal information, access web knowledge, and offer more comprehensive capabilities.

Apple has historically held its fall iPhone events in the first two weeks of September. Based on past release cycles, pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are anticipated to open on Saturday, September 12, at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time. It is important to note that Apple is not releasing a standard iPhone 18 model in September 2026. Instead, the company plans to focus on its premium Pro models this fall, with the standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and iPhone Air 2 slated for a spring 2027 release.
