iRobot's Duo Concept: A Smart Vacuum Within a Vacuum

BERLIN – iRobot showcased a groundbreaking concept at IFA 2026, dubbed the Roomba Duo, which features a substantial floor-cleaning robot with a smaller, integrated unit capable of tackling more delicate tasks. This dual-robot system, resembling a futuristic droid, represents a significant potential evolution in automated home cleaning.

The Roomba Duo concept is a substantial, cylindrical device standing approximately two feet tall and weighing around 66 pounds. iRobot product managers explained that this considerable size and weight are intended to provide "extra power" and a larger capacity for its integrated water tank, enabling it to handle heavy-duty cleaning that might otherwise require traditional stick vacuums or wet/dry mops. During a demonstration, the main unit successfully vacuumed and steamed a simulated spaghetti spill on a carpet, leaving minimal residue.

Following the main unit's cleaning cycle, it lowered its upper section, releasing a smaller, disc-shaped robot designed for more intricate cleaning. According to an iRobot representative, this secondary bot is similar to the Roomba Plus 575, a smaller sweeping and mopping unit the company introduced earlier this year. This robot-in-a-robot design allows for detailed cleaning, such as navigating under furniture with limited clearance, highlighting the versatility of the Duo concept.

Addressing Diverse Cleaning Needs

The innovation lies in the Roomba Duo's ability to address a spectrum of cleaning challenges. The large base unit is designed for robust performance, capable of handling substantial messes, while the detachable companion bot offers precision for smaller, more confined spaces. This modular approach aims to provide a comprehensive cleaning solution that adapts to different household needs without requiring multiple specialized devices.

While the Roomba Duo is currently a concept, iRobot is gauging market reaction to assess its potential for future production. The company has not yet released pricing information, but speculation suggests it could exceed the cost of high-end all-in-one cleaning systems, such as the $1,700 Dreame X60 Max Ultra Complete. Skepticism remains regarding the efficacy of the steam-cleaning feature for older or tougher stains, but the potential to manage large spills, like entire plates of food, could justify its development.
