Apple is reportedly gearing up to release the second iteration of its affordable laptop, the MacBook Neo, with significant upgrades expected to enhance performance and introduce advanced artificial intelligence features. The upcoming model, anticipated to be named the MacBook Neo 2, is slated to feature the next-generation A19 Pro chip and an increased memory configuration, moving from the current 8GB to 12GB of RAM. This upgrade is intended to bring the device in line with higher-end Apple products and unlock sophisticated on-device AI capabilities previously unavailable on the budget-friendly MacBook Neo line.

The current MacBook Neo, launched earlier in 2026, utilizes the A18 Pro chip, which also powers the iPhone 16 Pro. However, reports indicate that the MacBook Neo 2 will be equipped with the A19 Pro. This new chip is projected to offer a 10-15% performance increase in single-core and multi-core CPU tasks compared to its predecessor. The graphical processing unit (GPU) is expected to see an even more substantial boost, with benchmarks suggesting up to a 40% improvement due to the integration of Neural Accelerators within each GPU core. While the A19 Pro chip in the flagship iPhone 17 Pro models boasts a 6-core GPU, sources suggest that the MacBook Neo 2 will utilize a "binned" version, likely featuring a 5-core GPU.

A notable upgrade for the MacBook Neo 2 will be the increase in RAM from 8GB to 12GB. While the base MacBook Neo's 8GB of RAM was deemed adequate for many tasks by reviewers, the broader Apple Mac lineup now starts at 16GB. The move to 12GB of RAM, facilitated by the A19 Pro chip, represents a significant improvement for users seeking more headroom for multitasking and demanding applications.

New AI Capabilities and Design Updates

The combination of the more powerful A19 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM is key to unlocking new on-device artificial intelligence features. These enhancements, first previewed at WWDC 2026, are expected to offer more accurate dictation and enable advanced Siri voice customization options directly on the device, reducing reliance on cloud processing. These advanced AI functions were not supported by the previous A18 Pro chip and 8GB of RAM configuration in the original MacBook Neo.

In terms of aesthetics, the MacBook Neo has been known for its vibrant color options, including citrus, blush, indigo, and silver. While specific color details for the MacBook Neo 2 have not yet been revealed, Apple is reportedly planning to introduce new color choices periodically for this model line. The original MacBook Neo was released in March 2026.

According to reports from tech journalist Tim Culpan, the A19 Pro-powered MacBook Neo 2 is anticipated for a release sometime in 2027. This staggered release timeline allows Apple to differentiate its product offerings and manage market expectations. The upgrades signify Apple's commitment to expanding its affordable laptop segment with features previously reserved for its more premium devices, making powerful computing accessible to a wider audience.
