ASUS's Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand has partnered with Xreal to bring their AR gaming glasses, the ROG Xreal R1, to market. Pre-orders for the device, which debuted at CES, are now open, with the glasses priced at $849. Consumers can place orders through Best Buy, and the product will also be available directly from the Xreal website starting May 17, 2026.

The ROG Xreal R1 represents a significant upgrade over Xreal's previous flagship, the Xreal One Pro, which launched at $649. A key enhancement is the glasses' smoother 240Hz refresh rate, making them particularly suitable for fast-paced gaming genres like first-person shooters. The package also includes a bundled dock designed to simplify connectivity for multiple consoles, PCs, and other hardware, offering a more robust setup than earlier Xreal devices.

Despite the performance boost, the ROG Xreal R1 retains many specifications from its predecessor. The augmented reality headset boasts a 57-degree field of view, capable of projecting a virtual screen up to 171 inches from a distance of four meters. The display resolution remains at 1080p, a specification that some users might find modest given the premium price point. However, manufacturing micro-OLED panels at higher resolutions in such compact form factors presents ongoing technical challenges.

Enhanced Connectivity and Portability

The included dock is a standout feature, addressing limitations of previous Xreal models by allowing more complex hardware connections. While direct USB-C connection to PCs is possible, the dock ensures smoother operation with devices like the Nintendo Switch 2. Early indications suggest the dock may add considerable bulk, potentially sacrificing some of the device's inherent portability. This trade-off is likely aimed at users prioritizing a dedicated, high-performance AR gaming setup over maximum mobility.

In terms of user experience, the R1 aims to provide a versatile platform beyond gaming. Users can also leverage the glasses for watching movies or performing general PC tasks, similar to the functionality offered by the Xreal One Pro. Though not yet tested by this publication, the positive reception of the Xreal One Pro, particularly its lightweight design and sharp visuals (even with prescription lenses), indicates strong potential for the ROG Xreal R1.

Xreal's previous hardware, like the Xreal One Pro, proved to be an invaluable tool for travelers, offering an expansive virtual display for entertainment and productivity on planes and in hotel rooms. The lightweight nature of these AR glasses contrasts sharply with heavier VR headsets, making them a more comfortable option for extended use. The company's continued innovation in the AR gaming space suggests a promising future for immersive entertainment and productivity devices.
