Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2: Brighter Screen, Bigger Battery

Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, an upgraded wearable designed for rugged use and outdoor adventures. Building on the foundation of its predecessor, the new model introduces a host of refinements, including a substantially brighter display, an extended battery life, and enhanced health-tracking capabilities. The device aims to compete directly with other high-end rugged smartwatches on the market, offering a premium experience for users who demand durability and advanced functionality.

The most prominent upgrades are immediately noticeable. The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 features a display that can now reach up to 5,000 nits of brightness, a significant leap from the 3,000 nits of the original model. While the screen size sees a minor increase to 1.52 inches from 1.5 inches, the enhanced luminosity promises better visibility in direct sunlight. Perhaps the most impactful improvement for daily use is the battery. Samsung has equipped the Ultra 2 with an 800mAh battery, a 35 percent increase over the previous 590mAh cell, suggesting a considerably longer operational time between charges.

Samsung has also focused on physical refinements to enhance comfort and usability. The Ultra 2 is 12 percent thinner than its predecessor, measuring 10.7mm in thickness. The attached band has also been slimmed down, contributing to a more comfortable fit. The watch is 25 percent lighter, making it less cumbersome for extended wear. Button design has been tweaked as well, with reduced protrusion. Notably, the central rotating button on the previous model, which lacked software functionality, has been replaced by a non-rotating version, streamlining interaction.

Enhanced Health and Performance Tracking

The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 comes packed with new health and fitness features. A key addition is the Vitals collection, which consolidates various health metrics, alongside updated Daily Cardio Load and Heart Health scores. For athletes, a new 'Trail Run' mode offers detailed insights into elevation, climbing progress, and terrain impact. This mode also includes 'hydration guidance,' an expansion of Samsung's Sweat Loss feature, which helps users monitor fluid intake during workouts.

Further catering to adventurous users, Samsung has partnered with diving equipment manufacturer Mares to integrate features aimed at improving safety during dives. These enhancements, set to be available later this year via an exclusive Diving app for the Ultra 2, will assist with safe ascent and descent monitoring. This collaboration highlights Samsung's commitment to expanding the watch's utility beyond typical fitness tracking into more specialized extreme sports.

During initial testing, the enhanced display proved invaluable for navigating trails and reviewing workout data in bright conditions. The larger battery life also allowed for extended use without frequent charging. While the Samsung Health platform and its new features are promising, some aspects, like the antioxidant level test, remain experimental. This particular feature analyzes light reflections to estimate carotenoid concentration, but early results suggest potential inconsistencies based on skin tone and dietary intake, requiring further validation.

The hydration reminders, a unique offering, are designed as workout-specific alerts. Users can configure these reminders based on percentage of body weight lost or by distance and time. While the setup is detailed, requiring configuration within specific workout modes like Trail Run or Hiking, it offers a sophisticated approach to managing hydration during strenuous activities. The system relies on body composition data provided by the user, rather than dedicated hardware sensors, to compute fluid needs. This approach, combined with the advanced tracking modes and rugged design, positions the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 as a formidable contender in the premium smartwatch market, especially for those with an active lifestyle.
