Samsung unveiled its latest book-style foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, on Wednesday, positioning it as a device for entertainment enthusiasts rather than just productivity users. Priced at $1,900, the new model sits between the Galaxy Z Flip 8 and the higher-end Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. Preorders are now open, with the phones set to be available in stores on August 7. The Z Fold 8 features a passport-sized, 4:3 aspect ratio design, intended to enhance experiences for watching horizontal videos, multitasking in landscape mode, and browsing vertical apps in portrait orientation.

The company's strategic shift with the Z Fold 8 comes at a critical juncture, as Apple is rumored to be preparing its own foldable iPhone for release in the fall. Reports suggest Apple's device may also adopt a squarish 4:3 aspect ratio, similar to some iPad models. Samsung's move is seen as an effort to preempt Apple and establish a new form factor standard. With years of experience and consumer feedback in the foldable market, Samsung aims to leverage its generational advantage.

"This is Samsung going on the offensive," said Francisco Jeronimo, IDC's vice president of client devices. "By bringing a wider, passport-style foldable to market ahead of Apple, Samsung gets to define the new format on its own terms rather than reacting to it later." Jeronimo added that with Apple's potential entry looming, Samsung needs to defend the foldable category it pioneered and cannot afford to play it safe.

A Compact and Engaging Design

During an early hands-on session at Samsung's Korea headquarters and later at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London, the Z Fold 8 presented a distinctively compact feel. When folded, it comfortably rests in the palm, offering a refreshing departure from the typical smartphone slab. Its dimensions, measuring 9.7mm when closed and 4.5mm when open, make it notably lighter and less bulky than previous iterations. Samsung EVP Kihwan Kim highlighted the Z Fold 8's suitability for "people who really enjoy media and social networks," emphasizing that extensive user feedback guided its development toward media consumption priorities.

The redesigned hinge system, a result of user input, reduces the tension required to open the device, making it feel more accessible. While it doesn't allow for partial unfolding like its predecessor, the reduced effort is a significant usability improvement. The device maintains an IP48 water-resistance rating, capable of withstanding submersion in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for 30 minutes. This rating is standard for foldables, though it falls short of the IP68 standard offered by some competitors like the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

The Z Fold 8 sports a 5.5-inch cover screen and a 7.6-inch main display, both enhanced with an anti-reflective coating to combat glare. Coupled with a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, the displays are designed for improved visibility, even in bright outdoor conditions. Samsung's new Flex Titanium display technology, combining a titanium-alloy film with a titanium plate, contributes to a thinner and more durable screen structure, potentially increasing resilience against drops and impacts. This technology also appears to minimize the screen crease, a common concern with foldable phones, making it even less noticeable than on last year's model.

The 4:3 aspect ratio of the Z Fold 8 aligns with other wider foldables such as the Microsoft Surface Duo and the first Google Pixel Fold. This form factor aims to strike a balance between the expansive screen of larger foldables and the portability of traditional smartphones. The adjustment from a conventional phone to this wider, squarer cover screen might encourage more frequent use of the main display, a change from the Z Fold 7 experience.

Battery life sees an upgrade with the Z Fold 8, featuring a new silicon-carbon battery with a capacity of 4,800 mAh, an increase from the 4,400 mAh unit in the Z Fold 7. This should offer more endurance throughout the day. Charging speeds are also improved, with support for 45-watt wired charging that Samsung claims can reach 63% battery in 30 minutes, a significant boost from the previous 25-watt standard. The device also supports 20-watt wireless charging.

The camera system on the Z Fold 8 is more streamlined compared to the Z Fold 8 Ultra, offering two 50-megapixel rear cameras (wide-angle and ultrawide) and 10-megapixel selfie cameras on both the cover and internal screens. The absence of a telephoto lens is a notable compromise for photography enthusiasts, though Samsung suggests enhanced digital zoom capabilities may compensate.

AI features are integrated into the Z Fold 8, including an update to its camera software. The new My FanCam feature allows AI to track a chosen individual within videos, useful for capturing performances or sporting events. Additionally, the phone offers AI-powered aspect ratio adjustments for social media content, though the AI zooming may impact video quality. This comes as AI continues to be a significant focus for Samsung's mobile division.
