1Password is rolling out a novel integration for Mac users today, enabling Anthropic’s AI agent, Claude, to sign into websites without ever seeing sensitive credentials like passwords or two-factor authentication codes. This new feature, named 1Password for Claude, allows authorized AI agents to perform browser-based tasks that require logins, such as managing online accounts or booking travel, by securely delivering necessary information.

According to 1Password, approved credentials are sent through a secure channel and directly injected into the relevant web page. Crucially, the password, one-time code, and other secret data never enter Claude’s operational context, its memory, or Anthropic’s systems. Instead of granting broad access to a user's entire password vault, Claude must request specific login items needed for a particular task. Users can then approve or deny these requests via a biometric prompt, with permissions typically lasting only for the current session.

This functionality extends to multi-website tasks, where 1Password can facilitate access across different sites during a single workflow. This means Claude can complete complex, multi-step processes without interruption for repeated logins, streamlining automated online activities.

Introducing Agentic Mode for Enhanced Security

The launch also introduces what 1Password terms as “Agentic Mode.” When a compatible AI agent, like Claude, takes control of the browser for automated tasks, the 1Password browser extension automatically locks down the user’s vault. Only those credentials explicitly authorized for the ongoing task remain accessible. Users are notified when this mode is active and can cancel it at any moment. Furthermore, 1Password stated that it analyzes the webpage post-autofill. If a form submission fails, any entered data is wiped clean before control is returned to the AI agent, preventing potential data leakage or errors.

This development marks a significant step in the convergence of AI agents and password management. As AI becomes more capable of performing complex online actions, the need for secure, granular control over credential access becomes paramount. Previous integrations often required broader permissions or less secure methods, raising concerns about data privacy and security. The 1Password for Claude integration addresses these concerns by creating a secure intermediary that mediates access, ensuring that the AI only receives the minimal necessary information for its specific task.

The partnership between 1Password and Anthropic was initially announced in March, outlining plans for Claude to gain consent-based access to vault items. This release actualizes that vision for Mac users, serving as a foundation for similar integrations with other AI agents designed for browser-based operations. The company also indicated that support for payment cards and identity information is planned for a future update, further expanding the utility of this secure automation feature.

1Password for Claude is available immediately for Mac users subscribed to business, family, and individual plans. It requires both the 1Password desktop app and browser extension, as well as the Claude desktop app and its corresponding browser extension. This integration arrives as operating systems like Apple’s iOS 27 and macOS 27 also begin to incorporate AI-driven features, including password reset functionalities, indicating a broader trend towards AI integration in user security and convenience.
