Final Fantasy XIV Announces Major Housing Overhauls, Inspired by WoW
Final Fantasy XIV director Yoshi-P revealed two significant housing system updates are planned, with inspiration drawn from World of Warcraft's recent housing expansion. The changes aim to improve accessibility and address player demand.

Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida announced on Saturday that two major updates are in development for the game’s long-awaited housing system. Speaking at the Berlin Fan Festival, Yoshida indicated that inspiration for these enhancements came in part from observing changes made to the housing system in Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft.
“We have an immense respect for the World of Warcraft team,” Yoshida stated during the press conference. He noted that when the WoW team announced their housing system, they specifically mentioned looking to Final Fantasy XIV and aiming to surpass it. “I think that in itself is very much a sense of great honour for us to hear,” he added. Yoshida confirmed he personally tested the WoW housing system and found it to be “amazing,” which prompted a re-evaluation of the current state of housing within FF14.
“We always like taking on new challenges. So, this time around, when I tried WoW's housing, I thought it really is amazing, and it's been a good source of research,” Yoshida explained. He confirmed that two substantial overhauls are slated for the Patch 8.X series, though exact release dates remain unspecified. The first update will focus on the game’s user interface (UI), which Yoshida acknowledged can be “quite technical, and it’s not very accessible” for many players. The goal is to create a more intuitive UI that allows casual players to easily design elaborate housing layouts.
Addressing Player Concerns
While Yoshida was more forthcoming about the UI modifications, details surrounding the second update remain largely under wraps. However, he hinted that this particular enhancement might be released sooner than the UI overhaul and is expected to be something players have been actively requesting. “It's currently in the planning process right now on our end,” Yoshida said, “and possibly there is a higher chance that it will get released earlier than the UI update.” He promised further details would be shared once more visibility on the timeline is available. “I can’t actually say any specific details right now, but I think once we are able to share those details, it’s probably the number one thing on the list [that] a lot of people are requesting.”
The availability of housing plots has been a persistent point of contention for the Final Fantasy XIV player base. The current system, which often involves a lottery for coveted plots, has drawn widespread criticism due to high demand and limited supply. While the upcoming UI update will undoubtedly benefit existing homeowners by simplifying management, many players are eagerly anticipating the second, yet-to-be-detailed update, hoping it will address the core issue of plot acquisition. The developer’s commitment to refining the Final Fantasy XIV housing experience signals a move towards greater player satisfaction and engagement with one of the game’s most popular social features.
The inspiration drawn from World of Warcraft highlights a growing trend of cross-pollination of ideas within the MMORPG genre. Developers are increasingly looking to successful features in competing titles to innovate and improve their own offerings. This exchange of inspiration, particularly in areas like player housing which significantly impacts player retention and community building, can lead to richer and more engaging experiences across the board. Final Fantasy XIV’s proactive approach to revamping its housing system, driven by both internal development and external observation, suggests a strong focus on player feedback and long-term game health. The anticipation for these updates underscores the importance of player housing as a core component of the modern MMORPG experience.
