Apple is expected to release the public beta version of its upcoming iOS 27 operating system this week, allowing users to test new features before the official launch. The update, previewed at WWDC 2026, will introduce a dramatically enhanced Siri, infused with artificial intelligence to offer a more conversational and integrated experience across Apple devices.

The most significant change is the evolution of Siri into what Apple calls "Siri AI." This new iteration functions as a conversational AI agent, similar to models like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. It will be capable of performing tasks and deeply integrating with applications on iPhones and other Apple devices. This advancement is built upon an updated Apple Intelligence model, developed in partnership with Google, which was first hinted at in a joint statement in January. Siri will also gain a standalone app, providing a chat interface reminiscent of other popular AI assistants, complete with chat history that syncs across iCloud devices.

Smarter Assistant, Enhanced Features

Beyond its conversational abilities, Siri AI will offer new functionalities like an "Ask Siri" toggle within built-in apps. This feature will allow users to seek help directly within applications, such as finding specific emails or gaining more information on highlighted text. Additionally, a "Write with Siri" option will assist users in composing and generating text. Customization options for Siri's voice speed, expressiveness, and language will also be available. Visually, Siri will be integrated into the Dynamic Island on compatible iPhones, replacing the previous full-screen glow with a more streamlined bubble interface.

The iOS 27 update is also bringing several other improvements. New child safety features aim to provide parents with more robust tools for managing screen time and content their children can access. For photography enthusiasts, Photos app enhancements include tools for image reframing, allowing users to adjust photo perspectives. Siri will also be more deeply integrated into Photos, enabling users to search for specific images using natural language queries.

A new bill-splitting feature will be introduced, enabling users to photograph receipts, assign individual items to different people, and generate payment requests. Another notable addition is the "Liquid Glass" effect, which will feature a slider for users to control its transparency, a design element first seen in previous updates. For app interaction, a "Describe a shortcut" feature will allow users to create custom automations using voice commands, streamlining multi-app tasks.

While iOS 27 is slated for a general release this fall, likely following Apple's annual iPhone event, the advanced "Siri AI" capabilities will be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models and newer. This limitation is due to the advanced processing power required for these sophisticated AI functions, a detail that highlights the increasing hardware demands of cutting-edge mobile technology. All iPhones from the iPhone 11 and newer, including the second-generation iPhone SE, will be compatible with the core iOS 27 operating system.
