Quake's 30th Anniversary Sees NIN Merch Sell Out

The groundbreaking first-person shooter Quake is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a new expansion pack and a limited-edition merchandise collection that includes contributions from industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails. The "Dawn of the Machine" expansion, developed by MachineGames, introduces a new episode with 19 original maps. This new content is available for free to owners of the 2021 remaster of the base game, as announced at the start of the annual QuakeCon event.

Adding to the festivities, the anniversary celebration also features a special merchandise line, a collaboration with Trent Reznor, the frontman of Nine Inch Nails. The collection included items like replicas of the in-game nail gun ammo boxes and apparel. However, much like typical concert or event merchandise, the collection saw overwhelming demand, with most items quickly selling out. As of the announcement, only the vinyl LP featuring the game's music remained available.

Trent Reznor's Enduring Connection to id Software

Trent Reznor, a long-time admirer of id Software's work, provided the atmospheric soundtrack and sound design for the original 1996 game. His involvement was a significant element of the game's unique identity. Reznor expressed his long-standing admiration for id Software, noting a parallel between his own musical endeavors and the revolutionary approach of early id games. "Many years ago, when I first encountered Wolfenstein, it felt impossible," Reznor stated during a pre-recorded message at QuakeCon. "Doom comes out. It was like a bomb went off… It felt a parallel to what I was trying to do with music. Misshaping things and trying to express myself. Really felt a connection to it." This shared creative spirit fostered a unique partnership, even leading to the iconic nail gun in the game being restocked by boxes bearing the NIN insignia.

The "Dawn of the Machine" expansion itself harks back to the original game's fully rendered gothic aesthetic. Some of its new map designs appear to draw inspiration from more recent titles that have paid homage to Quake's legacy, such as the popular indie game Dusk by David Szymanski. The continuation of Quake's legacy through new content and celebrations highlights the game's lasting impact on PC gaming, particularly its pioneering use of 3D graphics and its influential multiplayer arenas. The proliferation of the Quake Engine also powered numerous other titles, cementing its importance in the history of game development.

The sold-out status of the limited-edition merchandise underscores the enduring appeal of both the Quake franchise and its association with Nine Inch Nails.
