Reddit Tests AI Audio and Video for Posts to Modernize Content
Reddit is experimenting with AI to transform text-based posts and comments into engaging audio and short video formats. The feature aims to offer new ways for users to consume content on the platform.

Reddit is piloting a new feature that leverages artificial intelligence to convert text-based discussions into audio and short video experiences. This experiment aims to modernize content consumption on the popular social media platform by offering alternative formats beyond traditional text threads.
Currently, a select number of Reddit posts are being transformed into videos where AI voices narrate the main post and selected comments. These videos visually highlight the text as it is spoken, with an accompanying note indicating that the content is "Real conversation voiced by AI." For instance, an eight-year-old post from the r/boardgames subreddit, seeking recommendations for adult-friendly road trip games, has been adapted into a three-minute video. Instead of scrolling through a text conversation, users can now watch and listen as AI voices read out the various suggestions and replies. A toggle allows users to switch between the original "Read" text format and the "Play" video version.
While this AI-driven format could make Reddit content more accessible, especially for users less familiar with online forums, potential challenges include AI mispronunciations or the misattribution of comments. Reddit spokesperson Rosa Kim stated, "This is an early, limited experiment to understand whether people find these formats useful and how we can deliver them in a way that feels authentic to Reddit." The company is manually selecting posts for this initial phase, which began on the web and is scheduled to expand to iOS and Android devices starting Tuesday.
Context and Future Implications
This initiative aligns with Reddit's broader strategy to enhance user engagement and content accessibility. In a recent shareholder letter, the company announced its intention to "reimagine how users and communities connect, share, and consume content through a modernized video experience on Reddit." CEO Steve Huffman further hinted at this direction during an earnings call, mentioning the development of features that would allow users to listen to posts in the background. He observed an "emerging content type" where individuals consume Reddit content through AI-generated readings of posts, suggesting that a spoken version of Reddit "can be really engaging as well." The platform has also recently introduced video replies, signaling a significant push towards richer media formats.
The introduction of AI-generated audio and video content represents a potential paradigm shift for how information and discussions are shared and consumed on Reddit. By catering to different consumption preferences, the platform seeks to broaden its appeal and retain users in an increasingly competitive digital landscape. The success of this experiment could pave the way for more sophisticated AI integrations, transforming the user experience and potentially opening new avenues for content creators.
