Spotify Adds Playlist Notes for Deeper Music Storytelling

Spotify is enhancing its platform with a new feature called "Playlist Notes," enabling both everyday users and its own editorial team to attach personal explanations and context to music selections. This expansion builds upon the recently introduced "User Notes," which allowed annotations for individual tracks. Now, users can provide background or emotional resonance for songs, podcast episodes, and audiobooks within any playlist they own or contribute to.

The functionality is accessible via the Spotify mobile application. To add a note, users navigate to a playlist, tap the three-dot menu next to a specific item, select "Add Note," and then save their text. These annotations become visible to anyone who can view the playlist, offering a glimpse into the curator's thought process. Whether a song evokes a cherished memory or is simply a personal recommendation, the notes aim to deepen the connection between the listener and the music.

Elevating Editorial Curation

Beyond user-generated content, Spotify is integrating Playlist Notes into its curated editorial playlists. This means Spotify's editors can now share the rationale behind their song choices, providing transparency into how popular playlists like "Today's Top Hits," "RapCaviar," "Hot Country," "All New Pop," and "Fresh Finds Hip-Hop" are assembled. Accompanying this are new "Editor Profiles," which will showcase an editor's preferred tracks, albums, and the playlists they manage. This initiative aims to offer listeners greater insight into the individuals shaping their musical discovery on the platform.

The introduction of Playlist Notes aligns with Spotify's broader strategy to foster a more social and personal user experience. User-created notes are presently rolling out to iOS and Android devices across more than 100 global markets. The editorial notes and accompanying editor profiles are being deployed to both free and premium subscribers aged 16 and older in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
