X Relaunches Rebuilt Android App After Year-Long Effort
X has released a completely rebuilt Android app after nearly a year of development. The new version promises significant improvements in speed, reliability, and feature development.
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has officially launched a completely rebuilt Android application on Monday, concluding a development effort that spanned nearly a year. This significant overhaul aims to rectify past performance issues and lay the groundwork for future feature integration on the dominant mobile operating system.
The refreshed Android app was constructed from the ground up, a stark contrast to incremental updates. X's Head of Product, Nikita Bier, described the project as one of the most substantial engineering undertakings in the company's history. In August 2025, Bier had announced the formation of an Android "dream team" tasked with this ambitious reconstruction. The urgency was underscored by a surge in Android downloads in October 2025, highlighting the platform's importance to the company's user base.
"It’s faster, smoother and more reliable. But most of all: it will enable us to build new features at lightning speed," Bier stated on X, emphasizing the agility the new architecture is expected to provide. This rebuild is particularly critical for global markets where Android holds a significant share of smartphone usage, and where X has faced challenges in user engagement due to prior performance deficits. At one point in 2025, the app was so unreliable that users encountered issues loading posts from links.
Future Development and Ongoing Improvements
The launch is not the end of the development cycle for the Android app. Bier acknowledged that some elements still require refinement, including optimizing performance for older devices and integrating X's live audio feature, Spaces. These enhancements are already in progress.
Furthermore, X is poised to introduce a suite of new functionalities to the Android platform soon. Features like a new video editor, a react-with-video capability, cashtags, and custom timelines are slated for upcoming releases. This accelerated feature rollout capability is a key benefit of the foundational rebuild. X has also recently introduced other new services such as X Money and X Chat, which were initially launched as separate applications.
Existing users can access the new X experience by updating their current application via the Google Play Store. This relaunch is a critical step for X as it seeks to enhance user experience and expand its feature set across all major platforms, aiming to solidify its position in the competitive social media landscape.
