Google Earth AI Image Tool Rolled Back After One Day
Google Earth's new AI image generation tool, which allowed users to create visuals from text prompts, was removed less than 24 hours after its launch due to misuse concerns.

Google rapidly pulled a new artificial intelligence feature from Google Earth on Friday, just one day after its debut, following concerns about its potential for misuse in generating deceptive imagery. The tool, designed to allow users to create new visuals based on text prompts, was reportedly capable of producing deepfake-like content, leading to its swift discontinuation.
The feature, which leveraged AI to transform textual descriptions into satellite-style images, quickly drew attention when users began experimenting with its capabilities. Digital Digging founder Henk van Ess demonstrated the tool's potential for misinformation by generating images depicting sensitive scenarios, such as the presence of refugees near the Mexican border and a bomb crater in Gaza, which were not based on real-world satellite data.
Initially, Google responded to van Ess's findings by stating that images generated through the Nano Banana 2 model within Google Earth were watermarked and that the company had safeguards against creating content related to harmful topics. However, the rapid evolution of AI-generated media and the challenges in content moderation became apparent when van Ess reported that Hive's AI detection tool was fooled by a video created with the Google Earth feature, suggesting that watermarks might not be sufficient to prevent the spread of manipulated media.
Concerns Over Misinformation and Policy Violations
In a subsequent statement, Google acknowledged the dual nature of the feature's reception. "We know that people uniquely trust Google Earth for a reliable view of the world," the company stated. "We’ve seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes, however we’ve also seen people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies." This admission highlighted a significant challenge: while the tool offered potential for creative and professional applications, it also proved susceptible to generating content that undermined the platform's core value of providing accurate geographical information.
The company elaborated on its decision, stating, "So we’re rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails. It’s important to note that generated images didn’t appear in the main Google Earth experience for others to see and were watermarked as AI generated." This indicates that the generated images were intended for experimental or personal use and were not meant to be integrated into the primary, publicly viewable maps. The watermark was an attempt to clearly label the content as synthetic.
Van Ess's experience further underscored the limitations of current AI detection and content moderation systems. He noted that his attempts to generate problematic content were largely unhindered. "Nothing was refused, nothing was softened, and nothing suggested I try a different prompt," he recounted, pointing to the ease with which users could potentially bypass intended restrictions. The ability of AI-generated images to circumvent detection tools, even with visible watermarks, raises broader questions about the future of digital media authenticity and the race between generative AI and detection technologies.
The rapid rollout and subsequent rollback of the Google Earth AI image feature serve as a critical case study in the challenges of deploying powerful generative AI tools responsibly.
