Apple is reportedly nearing the launch of its long-rumored camera-equipped AirPods, with new evidence suggesting they will be branded as 'AirPods Pro' rather than a higher-tier 'AirPods Ultra' model. A reference found within a macOS Tahoe 26.7 file, labeled 'AirPods Pro,' strongly indicates the naming convention Apple intends to use for the innovative earbuds. While a placeholder name cannot be entirely ruled out, the presence of a full video depiction of the new AirPods within the software implies a near-final product and name.

Speculation surrounding the exact branding for the camera-enabled AirPods has been ongoing. Renowned tech analyst Mark Gurman of Bloomberg had previously indicated in March that Apple was exploring 'Ultra' branding for various devices, including potential AirPods Ultra, foldable iPhones, and OLED MacBooks. However, the recent software hints point away from this nomenclature for the earbuds. Gurman also posited that Apple's 'Pro' designation might signal a price point not significantly higher than the current $249 AirPods Pro 3, despite earlier expectations of a more premium cost for the camera-equipped version.

Camera Integration for Enhanced Siri AI

The primary function of the camera integrated into these new AirPods will not be for capturing photos or videos by users. Instead, it is designed to feed visual information directly to Siri AI, aiming to create a more intuitive and capable version of Visual Intelligence. This integration promises to offer users a new way to interact with their devices and access information through enhanced AI capabilities, potentially revolutionizing voice-activated assistance.

Development of these camera AirPods has faced some delays. Gurman reported in June that issues related to Siri AI functionality had pushed back the launch. Initial projections suggested a release in September 2027, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. However, more recent updates in early August revised this timeline. Gurman indicated that Apple was now close to unveiling these innovative earbuds, identified internally by the codename B790. This model appears to have progressed alongside another version, B798. Apple is known for its internal development of competing product versions, and B790 seems to be the one closer to market readiness. While differences between B790 and B798 remain unclear, the visual confirmation in macOS Tahoe suggests the product is indeed ready for a market debut sometime this year.

The development signifies a notable step forward in wearable technology, blending advanced audio features with cutting-edge visual AI. This move by Apple could set new standards for smart earbuds, enhancing their utility beyond music playback and communication to become sophisticated AI-powered assistants. The company's strategic decision to incorporate a camera for AI processing, rather than user-generated content, highlights a focus on practical innovation and user experience within its ecosystem.
