Framework Laptop 12 Upgrades: New Intel Chips Boost Performance
Framework has updated its colorful and compact Laptop 12 with new Intel Core Series 3 processors, offering significant performance and battery life improvements. The updated model starts at $549 for a DIY version.

Framework is enhancing its popular, compact Framework Laptop 12 with substantial internal upgrades, including the latest Intel Core Series 3 processors. The company announced on August 19, 2026, that the updated laptop will feature faster chips, improved battery efficiency, and optional enhancements like a backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader. These changes aim to bolster the performance and user experience of the already well-received model.
The new Framework Laptop 12 configurations will offer a choice between Intel Core 3, Core 5, or Core 7 chips, paired with 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of RAM, respectively, for pre-built versions. Framework reports that the integration of the new Intel Core Ultra Series 3 chips brings notable efficiency gains, similar to those seen in the Framework Laptop 13 Pro. The company specifically highlighted that the Core 5 model demonstrated a 70 percent improvement in battery life during Netflix streaming tests compared to the original Core i5 version of the Laptop 12.
Enhanced Performance and Features
Beyond processing power, the updated Laptop 12 benefits from support for Thunderbolt 4 technology on two of its four hot-swappable Expansion Card slots. The laptop also now utilizes faster DDR5 RAM. While the 12.2-inch display remains unchanged, customers can opt for a backlit keyboard and a fingerprint reader for enhanced usability. Framework, known for its commitment to customization and repairability, continues to offer a DIY (Do It Yourself) option, allowing users to build their own machines from components.
For pre-built models running Linux, the Core 5 and Core 7 configurations will include both the backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader as standard. This move reflects a strong user preference, as Framework noted that over 80 percent of original Laptop 12 owners utilize Linux. Consequently, the new model will ship with Fedora pre-installed, with Windows 11 available as a $100 upgrade. Framework has also ensured that hardware support from other Linux distros will be ready upon the laptop's release.
The Framework Laptop 12 starts at $699 for a pre-built Linux model available in green. A DIY version begins at $549 and comes in a variety of colors including black, gray, light purple, pink, and green. Framework is currently accepting pre-orders, with the first shipments expected to begin in October 2026. This refresh positions the Framework Laptop 12 as a compelling option for users seeking a customizable, high-performance, and energy-efficient portable computer.
