Motorola is gearing up to release a new line of smartphones in 2027 that will feature support for the privacy-centric GrapheneOS mobile operating system. This collaboration, announced earlier this year, marks the first time GrapheneOS will be officially supported on devices other than Google's Pixel phones. The upcoming Motorola devices are expected to be high-end, premium flagship models, and the GrapheneOS team anticipates their pricing will surpass that of current Pixel smartphones.

While the new Motorola phones will not come pre-installed with GrapheneOS, they will receive full support from both Motorola and the GrapheneOS project. GrapheneOS is known for its stringent hardware requirements to ensure the highest levels of security and privacy, a standard that only Google's Pixel phones have met until now. The operating system, built upon Android, incorporates advanced features such as enhanced memory protection, granular network permissions, customizable app sandboxing, and a duress code that can remotely wipe the device's data.

Premium Hardware Drives Elevated Costs

The GrapheneOS team has indicated that these forthcoming Motorola phones will be premium flagship devices. This suggests they will likely feature cutting-edge hardware and specifications, which naturally contribute to a higher price point. For context, Google's current Pixel 11 lineup starts at $900 for the base model, a notable increase from previous generations. The Pixel 11 Pro XL commands an even higher price, reportedly reaching $1,300. Therefore, Motorola's GrapheneOS-compatible phones are expected to be priced well over $1,000.

Several factors likely contribute to the anticipated high cost. Motorola's decision to not release new non-folding Edge phones in 2026 could suggest that the 2027 models might be foldable devices, which are inherently more expensive to produce. Additionally, ongoing price increases in components, driven in part by advancements in AI technology and manufacturing, could also be a factor. While Motorola produces numerous budget-friendly Moto G series devices, these are not considered viable candidates for GrapheneOS due to hardware limitations.

The foundation of GrapheneOS's compatibility with Pixel phones lies in Google's Tensor chips, which offer specific security features. Not all chipsets from other manufacturers, such as Qualcomm, provide the same level of security assurance. Only Qualcomm's high-end 8-series processors are considered comparable from a security standpoint, and these are exclusively found in premium flagship smartphones. This necessity for advanced, costly processors means that cheaper Motorola phones are unlikely to receive GrapheneOS support in the near future.

For GrapheneOS to be viable on a broader range of Motorola devices, the company would need to commit to offering extended software update support, which is currently lacking on their budget models. Motorola typically provides updates for only a couple of years on its lower-end phones, a duration insufficient for GrapheneOS's security and longevity requirements. While the GrapheneOS project has historically provided resources like a web-based USB installer for Pixel phones, similar tools are expected to be available for the Motorola devices upon their launch, though the installation process may still require a degree of technical expertise.
