Sony Interactive Entertainment will proceed with its controversial decision to discontinue the sale of physical PlayStation discs beginning January 2028, following widespread criticism from its gaming community. The company acknowledged the significant online pushback received since the announcement on July 1 but indicated it will advance the plan. During a recent investor Q&A session following Sony’s latest earnings call, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao addressed the decision, which had previously seen limited public comment from the company.

"There are various reasons we made this decision," Tao stated through an interpreter. "The biggest being that the digitalization of content overall has been progressing. That’s the big factor. It’s not just for PlayStation, but for all kinds of content, digitalization is progressing." She elaborated that extensive deliberation led to the conclusion, and Sony intends to "cautiously move this forward."

The move has ignited a firestorm of online petitions and social media campaigns, with many gamers expressing concerns over the elimination of the second-hand game market and reduced consumer choice. A prominent Change.org petition has garnered over 352,000 signatures as of July 31, 2026, urging Sony to reconsider its strategy. A planned boycott, dubbed PSBlackout, is scheduled for the week of August 23, encouraging players to refrain from engaging with Sony's platforms.

Gaming Industry Shifts Towards Digital Consumption

This strategic shift by Sony reflects a broader trend within the video game industry towards digital distribution. For years, developers and publishers have observed a steady increase in digital game sales, often facilitated by faster internet speeds and the convenience of instant downloads. While physical media has historically been a dominant force, providing tangible ownership and a thriving resale market, its market share has gradually diminished. Sony’s decision, while impactful for its dedicated player base, aligns with the evolving landscape where digital storefronts on consoles and PC platforms are becoming the primary means of game acquisition for many.

"We have received various opinions, and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forth those views to us," Tao acknowledged. She also conveyed Sony's intention to "consider" the sentiments of its affected customers, recognizing the deep personal connections many have with their game collections. "In the future digital ecosystem, how do we engage the gamers is something that we would like to continue to explore," Tao added, hinting at potential future initiatives designed to mitigate the impact on players.

Despite the acknowledgment of player emotions and the suggestion of future considerations, Sony has not yet detailed specific measures that will be implemented to address the concerns arising from the cessation of disc production. The implications for second-hand games, collector's editions, and players with limited bandwidth or storage capacity remain significant topics of discussion within the gaming community.
