Sony Xperia 1 VIII Redesign Features Square Camera, Enhanced Telephoto
Sony's new Xperia 1 VIII smartphone introduces a significant design overhaul with a distinct square camera module and a dramatically improved telephoto lens. The device also features an AI camera assistant and upgraded speakers.

Sony has unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VIII, marking a substantial departure from its established design language. The new model, released in May 2026, adopts a prominent, chunky square camera island, a significant aesthetic shift from the vertical triple-camera array that has characterized previous Xperia 1 series phones since 2020. This redesign also houses a substantially upgraded telephoto camera and integrates an AI-powered camera assistant.
The rear of the Xperia 1 VIII now features a raised, square module containing the three lenses, flash, and a Sony logo. While it shares a resemblance to some recent Motorola Edge designs, its angularity offers a distinct Sony identity. This refresh addresses the somewhat dated look of earlier models, injecting new life into the product line. Interestingly, this new design contrasts with the Xperia 10 VII, also recently refreshed, which opted for a horizontal camera bar.
Available in black, silver, red, and an exclusive online store gold, the Xperia 1 VIII boasts subtle texturing on its camera island, a frosted glass back, and aluminum edges. A dedicated camera shutter button features a knurled finish, a nod to traditional camera controls. Practicality is also enhanced with the inclusion of a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microSD card slot, and an IP65/68 water and dust resistance rating, although newer phones now offer higher IP68/69 ratings.
Enhanced Optics and AI Photography
The most significant hardware upgrade is the telephoto camera, which now utilizes a larger 1/1.56-inch sensor – nearly four times the size of its predecessor on the Xperia 1 VII. This substantial sensor, coupled with a 48-megapixel resolution and f/2.8 aperture, positions the 70mm-equivalent lens as a potential leader in smartphone telephoto performance. While Sony has moved away from the continuous optical zoom of previous models, a feature now adopted by competitors like Xiaomi, the focus is on delivering superior image quality through this larger sensor.
The main and ultrawide cameras remain 48-megapixel and largely unchanged from the previous generation. However, the entire camera system benefits from a new RAW multi-frame processing pipeline, improved bokeh effects, and updated macro capabilities now integrated into the default camera mode with autofocus support. A standout feature is the new AI camera assistant. This system proactively suggests filter options, framing adjustments, and lens choices before a photo is taken, offering fine-tuned tweaks such as selectively brightening subjects. Unlike Google's Camera Coach, which often requires manual activation, Sony's AI assistant appears to be enabled by default, though users can disable it.
Under the hood, the Xperia 1 VIII is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, paired with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage in the gold variant. New full-stage stereo speakers, tuned in collaboration with Sony Pictures and Sony Music, are said to provide clearer and louder audio. The 5,000mAh battery and 30W charging remain, but Sony claims optimizations have extended battery life by approximately one hour. A notable drawback is the update policy: only four years of OS updates and six years of security patches are promised, falling short of the longer support offered by many competitors.
The Sony Xperia 1 VIII is priced starting at £1,399 / €1,499 (approximately $1,765) for the 12GB/256GB model, with the 16GB/1TB version retailing for £1,849 / €1,999 ($2,355). While available for order in Europe and Asia, Sony has stated there are currently no plans for a North American release.
