Google Search Box Revamp: AI Agents, Mini-Apps Debut
Google is rolling out a major redesign of its Search box, dubbed its biggest upgrade in 25 years. New features include AI-powered query suggestions, information agents, and personalized mini-apps.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – Google unveiled a significant overhaul of its Search engine on May 19, 2026, introducing an intelligent Search box designed to better understand and anticipate user needs. This marks the most substantial change to the search interface in over two decades, reflecting a shift towards more conversational and complex user queries.
The redesigned Search box, rolling out globally starting today, expands dynamically as users type, offering AI-powered suggestions that go beyond simple autocompletion. These new suggestions aim to predict user intent, providing more relevant results from the outset. Integrated shortcuts within the interface now grant immediate access to features like AI Mode, Talk (for live search capabilities), and Create (powered by Google Lens's Nano Banana). The expanded ‘plus’ menu allows users to seamlessly upload images from their gallery or camera, as well as documents, directly into their search queries.
“This is the biggest upgrade to [the] Search box in over 25 years,” a Google spokesperson stated during the I/O 2026 conference, emphasizing the system’s capability to handle longer, more nuanced queries.
Information Agents and Generative UI
Beyond the immediate Search box enhancements, Google is introducing powerful new capabilities powered by its Gemini 3.5 Flash model, which now boasts over 1 billion monthly users. Among the most significant additions are "information agents," which operate in the background 24/7 to monitor and synthesize information across the web. These agents can provide users with timely updates on topics they care about, actively scanning news sites, blogs, social media, and real-time data feeds for finance, shopping, and sports.
For instance, an agent could continuously search for apartment listings that precisely match a user's detailed requirements, notifying them when a suitable property becomes available. Similarly, users interested in celebrity collaborations or product drops can set up agents to alert them instantly when new items are announced. These agentic capabilities will be available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer.
Furthermore, Google is bringing generative UI to all users for free this summer. This technology allows Search to create custom dynamic layouts and interactive visuals in real-time, adapting to complex topics like astrophysics or mechanical watch functions. Search will be able to assemble various components, including interactive visuals, tables, graphs, and simulations, to present information in a more engaging and understandable format. These advancements also extend to creating custom dashboards and trackers for ongoing tasks, such as wedding planning or managing a household move. These personalized "mini apps" are slated for release in the coming months for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States.
The seamless transition between AI Overviews and the dedicated AI Mode upon tapping "Show more" is also being rolled out globally. This integration ensures users can delve deeper into AI-generated summaries without a jarring shift in experience. The new intelligent Search box is a key component of Google's strategy to leverage artificial intelligence to make search more intuitive and personalized, moving beyond simple keyword matching to a deeper understanding of user needs and intents.
