Instagram Edits Launches on Mac Desktop to Challenge CapCut
Instagram has launched its short-form video editing app, Edits, on Mac desktop, introducing advanced features to compete with ByteDance's CapCut.

Meta has expanded its short-form video strategy by bringing its Instagram Edits application to the desktop on Mac. The new software is tailored for creators handling complex video-editing workflows that require a mouse, keyboard, and a larger display. This expansion places Instagram Edits in direct competition with ByteDance's CapCut, a video-editing tool that has been available on both Windows and Mac platforms since 2021.
The desktop software includes licensed and royalty-free music, automatic captions in multiple languages, and video and sound effects. Creators can sync text styles and audio saved on the mobile application directly to the desktop version. Furthermore, users have the ability to import custom font files and customize or import keyboard shortcuts from external editing programs. The interface also incorporates a full multi-track timeline, audio waveforms, and keyframes for transitions.
Expanded Workflow and Direct Publishing
“A lot of creators have described the same moment to us: a project gets too big for your phone,” Brett Westervelt, head of Edits, said in a blog post. “You’ve got a dozen clips going, you’re trying to land a cut on the exact beat, and your thumb covers the part of the timeline you need to see. Your work is growing, and your tools should grow with it. We’re expanding Edits to take on your most ambitious projects on desktop.”
The desktop application allows creators to publish content straight to Instagram with native capabilities like location and tagging built directly into the software. This update removes the previous requirement for creators to edit on a computer, download the file to a mobile device, and finalize edits before publishing. The platform supports both vertical and horizontal video formats and delivers watermark-free exports in 4K resolution.
The company announced plans to roll out weekly updates for the desktop editor, with current development focused on enabling seamless project editing across both mobile and desktop devices. Meanwhile, the mobile version of Edits continues to support a user base of more than 50 million creators.
