Apple's iOS 27 Mail App Boosts Search and AI Features
iOS 27 brings significant enhancements to Apple's Mail app, improving search relevance and integrating advanced AI capabilities powered by Siri.

Apple is rolling out substantial upgrades to its native Mail application with the upcoming iOS 27 update, focusing on a more intelligent search experience and the integration of powerful AI functionalities. These enhancements aim to streamline email management and communication for iPhone users, offering more personalized and efficient interactions.
The overhauled search system within Mail is a key highlight. Moving away from simple keyword and recency-based sorting, the new Mail search prioritizes results by relevance and user intent. For instance, a search for a specific retailer like "Sprouts" will surface recent orders before promotional emails, ensuring users find critical information quickly. This intelligent ranking promises to make sifting through large inboxes significantly easier.
AI-Powered Assistance with Siri
A central theme of the iOS 27 Mail update is the deep integration of Siri, Apple's virtual assistant. Users can now long-press any email to access a suite of Siri-powered tools. These capabilities include summarizing lengthy messages, extracting specific items like package tracking numbers or flight details, saving photos, and much more. Responses from Siri are integrated into the Siri app for easy follow-up questions, fostering a conversational AI experience. Furthermore, Siri can execute commands directly within the Mail app, such as deleting all messages from a particular sender or adding task-relevant information to the Reminders app.
The "Write with Siri" feature, positioned above the keyboard, offers writing assistance for composing emails. Siri can draft entire messages, review user-written drafts for errors, suggest rephrasing for better clarity, modify the email's style, or provide general writing tips. Crucially, "Write with Siri" is designed to mimic the user's unique writing style, tone, and punctuation, ensuring emails maintain a personal touch rather than sounding generic.
Additionally, iOS 27 enhances the existing Smart Reply feature, tuning its one-tap suggestions to better match the user's typical communication patterns, making them more natural and likely to be used. The Contextual Suggestions, previously a prominent feature, are now being extended to third-party applications and feature a refreshed design. These suggestions offer one-tap actions, such as adding flight times to Calendar or viewing routes in Maps directly from an email.
The new "Call Context" feature bridges the Mail and Phone applications. When a user calls a business with which they have a recent email exchange, the Phone app will display relevant information from that email, such as a reservation number or order confirmation. This feature operates on-device, analyzing the recipient to surface pertinent details without processing call audio.
Under the hood, Apple reports performance improvements across the Mail app. Messages are designed to load faster, search indexing is more dependable, and unread badge synchronization between different Apple platforms like iOS and macOS is more reliable. Updates to list formatting are also included.
It's important to note that while core search improvements are available on all devices running iOS 27, the advanced AI features—Siri AI integration, "Write with Siri," "Call Context," and enhanced "Contextual Suggestions"—require devices that support Apple Intelligence. Furthermore, Siri AI capabilities will not be available in the European Union or China at launch, and Contextual Suggestions will initially be limited to English.
