Cupertino, CA – Apple announced iOS 27 on June 8, 2026, bringing a highly requested feature that grants users more control over their iPhone's audio. The update introduces separate volume settings for alarms and timers, as well as for system alerts and sounds, distinct from the general ringtone volume.

Previously, iOS unified the volume for ringtones, alerts, and alarms, often forcing users to compromise on audibility for one function to avoid being overwhelmed by another. With iOS 27, users can now fine-tune their audio experience. A new setting allows for one volume level for ringtones, a second for alarms and timers, and a third for system sounds like text message notifications and keyboard clicks.

For alarms and timers, the new toggle, "Match Ringtone Volume," when deactivated, ensures that these specific sounds will not be affected by the ringtone's loudness. This means Wake-Up alarms and other alarms with their own adjustable volume will maintain their settings independently. "This volume will not affect Wake-Up alarm and other alarms with their own volume control," Apple stated regarding the new alarm volume setting.

Enhanced System Sound Management

The update also addresses system sounds, which encompass a range of audio cues from incoming message alerts to the subtle clicks of the keyboard and the camera shutter. Users can now adjust these sounds independently of their ringtone and alarm volumes. "Sounds for alerts, such as incoming texts, and for system sounds, such as keyboard clicks, the camera shutter, and more," are covered by this new granular control, according to Apple's documentation.

While iOS 27 does not appear to offer the ability to set different volume levels for individual alarms, this significant enhancement in sound management provides much-needed relief for many users. The ability to balance the urgency of an alarm with the subtlety of a notification or the loudness of a ringtone has been a persistent challenge for iPhone users.

This refinement in audio settings is part of a larger rollout of features for iOS 27, unveiled during the WWDC26 keynote. Apple's annual developer conference showcased numerous improvements to Apple Intelligence and the operating system's core functionalities. The company is also rolling out updates for iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate 27, and other platforms. The move towards more personalized user controls reflects a broader trend in consumer electronics, where users increasingly expect to customize their devices to suit their specific needs and preferences. This latest audio adjustment in iOS 27 is a welcome addition that enhances the overall usability and user experience of the iPhone for millions worldwide.
