OpenAI Debuts Codex Micro Keyboard for AI Agent Control
OpenAI has launched its first hardware product, the $230 Codex Micro, a compact programmable keyboard designed to enhance user interaction with AI agents like its coding assistant, Codex.
OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research lab known for ChatGPT, has officially entered the hardware market with the unveiling of its first product: the Codex Micro. This compact, programmable keyboard is designed to serve as a dedicated command center for interacting with AI agents, notably OpenAI's own coding assistant, Codex. The device, developed in collaboration with programmable keyboard maker Work Louder, is priced at $230 and aims to streamline workflows for users engaged in agentic tasks.
The Codex Micro, technically a macro pad, features 13 mechanical switches, a touch sensor, a rotary dial, and a joystick. Available in both clicky and silent switch variants, it ships with a set of 32 customizable keycaps bearing Codex icons to represent various shortcuts. Six illuminated keys provide visual cues for agent status: green for unread messages, blue for processing, orange for required approval, and red for errors. The joystick and dial offer further customization, allowing users to trigger specific workflows, such as debugging code, or adjust the AI's reasoning level for a given task.
Context and Future Ambitions
This launch comes amid intense speculation about OpenAI's broader hardware ambitions. Recent reports suggest the company is developing a more ambitious consumer device, potentially a screenless, mobile AI companion speaker, expected to be announced by the end of 2026. This venture is reportedly being undertaken with io Products, a hardware startup acquired by OpenAI last year for $6.5 billion. However, OpenAI's pursuit of hardware has not been without legal challenges. The company, along with two former Apple employees, faces a lawsuit from Apple accusing them of stealing trade secrets related to manufacturing processes and future products. Io Products is also named as a defendant in this suit.
For now, the OpenAI Codex Micro represents the company's initial tangible offering in the hardware space. Its introduction signifies a strategic move to integrate AI tools more directly into users' physical environments and workflows.
