GM Cars Get Apple Wallet Car Keys for Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC
General Motors is rolling out Apple Wallet car key functionality to select Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC models. This feature allows drivers to use their iPhones as digital car keys.

General Motors (GM) announced Monday that it is expanding the availability of digital car key technology, allowing drivers of select Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC vehicles to use their iPhone and Apple Watch with Apple Wallet as a digital car key. The rollout begins this week for certain models equipped with the necessary hardware.
The integration enables owners to securely store their car key in Apple Wallet, eliminating the need to carry a physical key fob. Users can unlock, lock, and even start compatible vehicles by simply holding their iPhone or Apple Watch near the car's door handle or in the wireless charging area. This feature leverages the security of the Secure Element within Apple devices.
Initially, the digital key functionality will be available on 2023 and newer Cadillac CT4 and CT5, alongside 2023 and newer Chevrolet Silverado models. GMC will see the feature implemented on 2023 and newer Sierra models. GM confirmed that more models will receive support for the Apple Wallet car key in the future, with an unspecified number of future vehicles already being built with the capability.
Context and Future Implications
The move by GM signifies a growing trend in the automotive industry towards digital vehicle access. While Apple Wallet car keys have been available on some other vehicle brands for several years, GM's broad adoption across its core brands marks a significant expansion for the technology in the United States market. This feature not only enhances convenience for iPhone users but also aligns with the broader push towards a more connected and integrated digital ecosystem for consumers.
GM's implementation utilizes its existing vehicle connectivity platform and works in tandem with the myChevrolet, myCadillac, and myGMC mobile applications. Drivers can still set up and manage their digital keys through these native apps. The company has stated that the digital key is designed with robust security protocols to prevent unauthorized access. The technology allows users to share access with up to five other individuals and can be set to last indefinitely or for a specified period.
The introduction of this technology could potentially reduce reliance on physical key fobs, which can be expensive to replace if lost or damaged. Furthermore, it opens up possibilities for enhanced remote services and car-sharing platforms, where access can be granted and revoked digitally and instantly. As more automakers embrace digital car keys and smartphone integration, consumers can expect a more seamless experience interacting with their vehicles.
