AMD has officially unveiled its latest desktop graphics card, the Radeon RX 9050, and with it comes a notable step backward in memory capacity for some configurations. While the official specifications list a maximum memory size of 8GB for the Navi 44-based card, ASRock's own product page has revealed a less powerful 4GB variant. This 4GB version, intended exclusively for pre-built gaming desktops, will also feature a halved memory bus, significantly reducing overall bandwidth.

An AMD representative confirmed that the 4GB model is a "system-only variant, not intended to be sold out of the pre-built system." This means consumers will not find the 4GB card available for standalone purchase. The primary 8GB model of the RX 9050 is slated for an introductory price of $279 USD. However, its initial release will be restricted to the Latin American and Asia-Pacific (APJ) regions, with no immediate plans announced for other markets.

Graphics Memory Returns to 2022 Levels

The reintroduction of 4GB graphics cards for desktops is a significant regression, as the last comparable AMD offering was the RDNA2-based Radeon RX 6400 in 2022. In the same year, Nvidia released the GTX 1630, and Intel launched the Arc 3 A370M. For context, the RX 9060, also an OEM-only card, has an 8GB variant that typically sells for around $400 USD, though better deals can be found with diligent searching. For many PC gamers, 8GB has been the baseline VRAM for new hardware purchases for some time, a standard we were already questioning for its sufficiency in 2025.

The RX 9050 represents AMD's first new desktop graphics card release in approximately a year. To achieve its lower price point and memory configuration, the card makes other compromises. It is equipped with 16 compute units, 16 RT cores, 64 texture units, and 1024 stream processors. This configuration places it at roughly a quarter of the performance of AMD's top-tier cards, which aligns with its reduced memory capacity.

Reporting from Uniko's Hardware on Twitter, a reliable source for component specifications, indicates that the 4GB version of the Radeon RX 9050 utilizes a 64-bit memory bus. This is in stark contrast to the 128-bit bus found on the 8GB model. This reduction in bus width is particularly concerning for gaming performance, as it directly impacts how quickly the GPU can access its video memory.

The decision to release a 4GB card in 2026, even in a limited OEM capacity, is being viewed by many as a significant step backward for the PC hardware market. It raises questions about AMD's strategy and the overall direction of graphics card development, particularly in an era where demands for higher resolutions and more complex graphical assets are constantly increasing. The focus on AI-driven workloads has also placed a premium on VRAM, making the availability of lower-memory options even more perplexing.
