Apple is expected to unveil its long-awaited foldable iPhone, speculated to be called the iPhone Ultra, within weeks at its annual September event. However, a prominent leaker has indicated that acquiring the device upon its release may prove challenging due to severely restricted initial production. The foldable iPhone's supply will reportedly be "extremely limited" following its introduction next month, according to Fixed Focus Digital, a leaker active on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. This news suggests that Apple's first foldable device could be difficult for early adopters to obtain, mirroring past launch challenges for the company.

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously projected that Apple might only ship between 7 to 8 million units globally in 2026. This forecast raises concerns about potential production bottlenecks, reminiscent of the iPhone X launch in 2017. During that release, manufacturing hurdles with components like the TrueDepth camera system for Face ID and constraints in OLED panel production significantly hampered availability. Pre-orders for the iPhone X sold out rapidly, leading to shipping delays that stretched for months.

While earlier rumors suggested an initial U.S.-only release for the foldable iPhone, recent reports from Fixed Focus Digital's sources indicate that mass production is progressing smoothly with Chinese suppliers. This development could signal a broader global launch from the outset, potentially mitigating some of the distribution issues.

Debate Continues Over 'iPhone Ultra' Naming

The official name for Apple's foldable device has been a subject of considerable speculation for months. Initially, the device was widely expected to be named the iPhone Fold. However, this spring, the 'iPhone Ultra' moniker began to gain prominence. Despite this, several analysts and leakers have recently expressed skepticism regarding the 'Ultra' name this summer. Instant Digital, another leaker, became the latest to cast doubt on the 'Ultra' designation over the weekend. In a Weibo post, he suggested that Apple might reserve the 'Ultra' name for its 20th-anniversary model and its successors, questioning whether the upcoming foldable would truly merit such a title based on Apple's past naming conventions.

Conversely, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who has extensively covered rumors surrounding Apple's foldable plans, noted earlier this month on X (formerly Twitter) that the device is referred to as the "Ultra internally." He added, "We’ll see what happens," leaving the final naming decision open. The full reveal is anticipated around September 9, when Apple typically holds its fall product showcase. The company is targeting a production run of approximately 10 million units, as detailed in a July report by Nikkei Asia. However, suppliers might require an extended period of 3 to 5 months to reach this output goal, further underscoring the potential scarcity at launch.

The introduction of a foldable iPhone represents a significant strategic move for Apple, entering a market segment currently dominated by competitors like Samsung. While Apple has a history of entering new product categories later than rivals, it often achieves success through refined execution and integration within its ecosystem. The success of this new device could depend not only on its hardware and software features but also on Apple's ability to manage production and supply chains effectively to meet consumer demand, especially in the initial launch phase. Consumers eager for the foldable iPhone will likely face a challenging purchase experience in the first few months.
