Apple announced its latest smartwatch models, the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, during its September 2026 product event in Cupertino. While major hardware changes are minimal, the new watches introduce significant software advancements, most notably integrating artificial intelligence features to enhance user interaction and health tracking. These updates position the Apple Watch within the growing market of AI-powered wearable technology.

The standout new feature is "Audio Intelligence," a suite designed to help users recall details from their daily interactions. "Live Rewind" allows users to access the last 15 seconds of a conversation by double-pressing the Digital Crown, presenting the content as a text snippet. This snippet can then be queried via Siri or saved for later review in the new Siri app. Complementing this is "Siri Recap," which uses ambient listening to create high-level notes of conversations, such as key takeaways from meetings or parent-teacher conferences. Once a conversation concludes and Siri Recap is active, Apple Intelligence automatically generates a title and summarizes the main points within the Siri app, without storing any audio recordings.

Another addition is "Sound Recognition," a feature developed to assist individuals with hearing impairments by identifying important environmental sounds like sirens, alarms, doorbells, and a baby crying. Apple has stressed that these audio intelligence features do not create or retain audio recordings, prioritizing user privacy.

Enhanced Health and Readiness Monitoring

Beyond AI-driven communication tools, the new Apple Watches also boast a revamped health-sensing system. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 feature an increased electrode surface area for improved skin contact during ECG readings. Redesigned photodiodes, arranged in a ring, aim for more efficient light capture, enhancing optical sensing capabilities. The inclusion of more power-efficient green LEDs also contributes to accurate, continuous heart-rate measurements throughout the day, even during physical activity. The system now delivers higher-frequency continuous heart rate data, capturing readings every five seconds all day long—a 60-fold increase in frequency compared to previous models. This continuous data stream serves as a crucial indicator of overall cardiovascular health.

Borrowing a concept from smart rings, the new Apple Watches introduce a "readiness score." This score is calculated each morning by analyzing recent activity, vital signs, and sleep patterns, providing a single metric for users to gauge their physical preparedness for the day. Additionally, a new "Health Age" feature allows users to compare their key health metrics, such as VO2 max and sleep quality, against their actual age, offering personalized insights based on the data collected by the watch.

The Apple Watch Series 12 will be available starting at $399, while the more rugged Apple Watch Ultra 4 is priced at $499. These advancements in AI and health technology underscore Apple's continued push to integrate its wearables more deeply into the daily lives and wellness routines of its users.
