Asus ROG NUC 16: High-End Mini PC Arrives with Steep Price
Asus's new ROG NUC 16 mini PC is set to launch, featuring top-tier Intel processors and Nvidia graphics. However, early pricing suggests a premium cost for gamers seeking compact power.

Asus is launching its most powerful and console-like mini PC to date, the ROG NUC 16, continuing the legacy of Intel's "Next Unit of Computing" line. The device is aimed squarely at gamers with limited desk space and boasts significant upgrades over its predecessors, though it comes with a considerable price tag.
The ROG NUC 16 features Intel's latest Arrow Lake CPU, the Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX, paired with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080 laptop GPU. It supports up to 128GB of RAM, offering substantial performance for demanding applications and games. This configuration positions the mini PC as a compact powerhouse, rivaling more traditional desktop setups.
Pricing details for the U.S. market have not yet been fully revealed. However, the mini PC will start at 29,999 Chinese yuan, which converts to approximately $4,420 USD. A "Moonlight" white edition is expected to cost slightly more, around $4,490. Asus has indicated that the black version will be available this month, with the white variant scheduled for June, though precise launch dates remain unconfirmed.
High-Performance Mini Gaming Rig
In comparison, the previous ROG NUC 15 starts at $3,400 with an Intel Core Ultra 7 255HX CPU and an RTX 5060 GPU. A higher-end configuration of the NUC 15, featuring an Arrow Lake CPU, RTX 5080, and 16GB of RAM, can reach close to $5,300. While the ROG NUC 16 promises enhanced performance over the NUC 15, early benchmarks suggest a modest uplift, with 3DMark's "Time Spy" showing only about a 3% improvement compared to the previous generation when using the same RTX 5080 GPU. The actual performance gains will likely vary depending on the specific game or application.
The surge in component costs, particularly for memory and storage, has impacted the pricing of consumer electronics, with gaming devices being significantly affected due to their higher requirements. This ongoing "RAM apocalypse" contributes to the elevated cost of the ROG NUC 16 and similar high-performance devices.
Despite its impressive on-paper specifications, some configuration details for the ROG NUC 16 are still pending. Asus's own store page, for instance, does not fully list the available GPU options for different configurations. The new model includes an updated stand that allows the PC to be positioned either vertically or horizontally. Asus claims that orienting the PC off the desk, in a cradle-like horizontal position, can further enhance cooling and performance.
Intel originally designed the NUC (Next Unit of Computing) line to offer compact PCs with desktop-level customizability. However, factors such as limited configuration options and high prices hindered the widespread adoption of certain models, like the Intel NUC 9 Extreme. In 2023, Asus took over the NUC design, focusing on the gaming market with its ROG (Republic of Gamers) branded mini PCs. The ROG NUC 16 represents the latest iteration in this strategy, aiming to deliver high-end gaming performance in a small form factor.
