Claude's Chrome Side Panel Evolves into Full Cowork Session

Anthropic announced on August 12, 2026, that its AI chatbot, Claude, is transforming its Chrome side panel into a comprehensive Cowork session. This significant update allows users to initiate browser-based tasks and conversations that can then be continued across Claude’s desktop, web, and mobile applications, bridging the gap between in-browser actions and broader AI workflows.

Conversations started within the Chrome side panel will now be automatically saved to the user’s Claude history. This means users can pick up exactly where they left off, regardless of the device or platform they are using. Furthermore, any skills and connectors previously configured for a user’s account will function directly within the browser extension without requiring any additional setup. The Claude extension for Chrome is designed to understand the context of the current web page and can perform actions using the user's existing browser logins. This capability enables Claude to interact with websites by clicking links, navigating between pages, entering text, and even filling out forms.

For example, a user could ask Claude to extract invoice details from multiple vendor portals and compile them into a spreadsheet using the Chrome extension. Later, they could transition to their desktop application to refine the same session, potentially adding local files or comparing the generated spreadsheet with previous budget data. This integration aims to eliminate the previous disconnect where side panel sessions were isolated from interactions in Claude’s other applications, preserving valuable context and continuity.

Enhancing Browser Agent Capabilities

Previously, sessions initiated in the Claude side panel were siloed, failing to carry over their context and conversation history to other Claude interfaces. This update addresses that limitation by ensuring that work initiated in the browser is part of a unified, ongoing session. Anthropic recently showcased Claude Code's in-app browser, which operates within an isolated profile. In contrast, the new Chrome extension leverages websites where the user is already authenticated, offering a more integrated experience. This allows Claude to act on behalf of the user in already-logged-in environments.

Anthropic has also acknowledged the inherent risks associated with browser agents, particularly the vulnerability to prompt injection attacks. To mitigate these risks, the company has implemented safeguards. A separate review process checks consequential actions when automatic approval is enabled. Moreover, Claude will still seek user confirmation before executing sensitive actions, such as making purchases or sharing personal data. While these measures are designed to significantly reduce potential risks, Anthropic cautions that they cannot entirely eliminate them.

The Cowork side panel feature is available immediately for users with Claude Max and Team subscriptions. A rollout for Pro customers is anticipated over the next few weeks. Enterprise administrators will have the ability to enable this feature and can configure it to restrict access to specific, approved domains. It is important to note that Claude in Chrome currently does not support other Chromium-based browsers or mobile device interfaces. This release signifies Anthropic’s ongoing commitment to making Claude AI’s functionality more portable and accessible across various platforms and devices.

This development follows recent enhancements such as live iOS app testing within Claude Code for Mac and new controls in Opus 4.8 designed to support longer-running tasks across a wider array of products and devices. The integration of a persistent, cross-application AI session represents a notable step forward in conversational AI usability and productivity for users engaged in complex digital workflows.
