The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra is set to adopt inkjet lens printing for enhanced image quality and a more compact camera module. This advanced manufacturing technique will be applied across its three rear cameras.

The highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra is reportedly set to refine its camera technology by expanding the use of a specialized inkjet lens printing process, a technique first seen on the previous model. Industry sources indicate that Samsung Electronics and Samsung Electro-Mechanics are implementing this precise ink application method across all three rear camera modules of the S27 Ultra, aiming for superior image quality and a reduction in the physical size of the camera system.
Traditionally, anti-reflective films have been employed to absorb stray light, preventing flare and ghosting artifacts in photos. However, these films add significant thickness to the complex lens stack. The new inkjet printing approach utilizes a precise application of matte ink to achieve the same light-blocking effect while occupying substantially less space. This innovation was initially introduced on the Galaxy S26 Ultra and is now slated for broader application on the S27 Ultra, specifically targeting the L3 Tele, L3 Wide, and L6 Wide lens layers. While only one layer within each module will receive the ink treatment, this selective application allows Samsung to meticulously balance optical performance, manufacturing efficiency, cost, and long-term durability.
Camera Hardware Evolution
This lens printing refinement is occurring alongside a significant overhaul of the S27 Ultra's overall camera configuration. Recent reports suggest a shift to a triple rear-camera system. This setup is expected to feature a substantial 200-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, and a single 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. This configuration would mark a departure from the previous model's inclusion of a 3x telephoto lens. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S27 Pro is anticipated to retain the same main and ultrawide sensors but will likely be paired with a 12-megapixel 3x telephoto lens. Both the S27 Ultra and S27 Pro are also rumored to sport a 16-megapixel front-facing camera.
The incremental space savings achieved through the inkjet printing process, even just a few micrometers per module, provide camera engineers with greater design flexibility. This extra room can be allocated to improving optical image stabilization (OIS) systems, which are crucial for sharp, blur-free images, particularly in low light or when using telephoto lenses. Alternatively, it allows for better management of the overall camera bump size, contributing to a sleeker device profile.
