Apple is reportedly preparing for a launch strategy for its upcoming foldable smartphone, the "iPhone Ultra," that may echo the challenges faced during the iPhone X's debut. Citing analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, reports indicate that manufacturing hurdles are impacting early production of the foldable device, potentially pushing its pre-order availability to the fourth quarter of 2026. This contrasts with the simultaneous launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which are expected to be unveiled alongside the foldable model but made available sooner.

The iPhone X, introduced in September 2017, experienced a similar staggered release, with pre-orders beginning six weeks after the initial announcement. Kuo's assessment suggests the "iPhone Ultra" could follow this pattern, limiting initial availability and creating anticipation among consumers. The foldable nature of the device, coupled with the complexity of its manufacturing process, are cited as primary reasons for the potential delay.

Apple TV Set for 2026 Refresh, iOS 27 Features Emerge

Beyond the iPhone, Apple is also anticipated to refresh its Apple TV 4K hardware in 2026. This update, absent since 2022, is reportedly timed to coincide with the rollout of Siri AI, a significant new feature expected within iOS 27. Details emerging from the third developer beta of iOS 27 also highlight enhancements to Siri's customization, new wallpaper options, and improvements to the Photos and Shortcuts applications. macOS 27 beta releases are accompanying these updates, introducing new Golden Gate-themed wallpapers.

Furthermore, the integration of advanced Apple Intelligence features within the Home app, particularly for summarizing motion alerts from HomeKit Secure Video cameras, will necessitate a substantial iCloud+ subscription. Apple has clarified that users will require at least a 2TB iCloud+ plan, priced at $9.99 per month, to access these capabilities. This requirement underscores Apple's strategy to monetize its AI-driven services and cloud storage offerings.

Regulatory filings from China have also provided insight into the battery specifications for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to feature a battery capacity of 4,056mAh in China and 4,288mAh in the U.S., a modest increase from its predecessor. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is slated for a more significant battery upgrade, with capacities of 5,391mAh in China and 5,567mAh in the U.S., representing an increase of nearly 500mAh. The foldable iPhone Ultra is reported to house a dual-cell battery system totaling a minimum rated capacity of 4,883mAh.

The annual Back to School promotion from Apple, typically launched in June or July for students, is also currently pending. While previous years have seen the offer commence earlier, Apple has historically waited until July in some instances. The specifics of this year's promotion, including potential free accessories like AirPods or Apple Pencil Pro with qualifying Mac or iPad purchases, remain undisclosed. The timing of this year's promotion is particularly relevant given recent price adjustments on Apple's Mac and iPad lineups.
