LG Display has introduced a groundbreaking OLED manufacturing technology called FLiPP, or FMM-Less Innovative Pixel Patterning, which promises to dramatically improve display performance and production efficiency. This new method abandons the conventional Fine Metal Mask (FMM) technique, enabling brighter screens, longer panel lifespans, and reduced manufacturing expenses.

The FLiPP technology utilizes a photolithography-based patterning process instead of the traditional FMM, which relies on precise deposition of organic materials through a fine metal stencil. In the new approach, RGB materials are applied sequentially, followed by a UV light exposure to precisely remove excess material, defining the pixels. LG Display states this method allows for an increased aperture ratio by approximately 55% compared to FMM-produced panels under similar conditions.

This enhancement directly translates to tangible benefits for consumers and manufacturers alike. LG reports that displays using FLiPP can achieve 1.6 times higher brightness, a remarkable 2.4 times longer lifespan, and consume 13% less power than those made with FMM. The increased brightness is a key advancement for premium display experiences, particularly in vibrant HDR content, while the extended lifespan addresses a long-standing concern for OLED technology.

Manufacturing Flexibility and Cost Reduction

Beyond performance gains, FLiPP addresses significant limitations inherent in the FMM process, especially concerning scalability and cost. Large FMMs are prone to sagging, which can lead to alignment issues and color inaccuracies. Furthermore, FMMs must be custom-made for different panel sizes and resolutions, adding complexity and expense to the manufacturing workflow. FLiPP circumvents these challenges by allowing RGB OLED patterning on large substrates without the need for heavy metal plates. LG Display is currently showcasing its new FLiPP OLED technology at IMID 2026 in Busan, South Korea. While the company has not yet announced specific commercial products that will incorporate this innovative technology, nor provided a definitive timeline for market release, the unveiling marks a significant step forward in OLED production.
