Sennheiser has launched its latest over-ear headphones, the Momentum 5 Wireless, building on the foundation of its predecessor with substantial internal enhancements. Released nearly four years after the Momentum 4, the new model focuses on refining the listening experience through improved active noise cancellation (ANC) and superior audio fidelity. While maintaining a similar design aesthetic, the Momentum 5 Wireless comes with a slightly higher price point of $400, a $50 increase over the previous generation.

At the core of the audio experience are the same 42mm dynamic transducers found in the Momentum 4, originally inspired by Sennheiser's renowned HD 600 series headphones and tuned for rich sound and powerful bass. However, the Momentum 5 Wireless introduces Hi-Res Audio certification and Snapdragon Sound technology, which includes support for the aptX Lossless Bluetooth codec. Users can further customize their sound through the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app, now featuring an 8-band equalizer, pre-set audio profiles, and personalized sound settings. For audiophiles seeking the utmost fidelity, the headphones are also compatible with Sennheiser's BTD 700 lossless Bluetooth dongle.

Advanced Connectivity and Immersive Sound

Sennheiser plans to roll out further audio enhancements via digital signal processing (DSP) Bluetooth updates. Notably, a "day one update" will introduce Dolby Atmos support with head tracking, enabling a more immersive audio-visual experience for compatible content. Currently, the headphones support Dolby Atmos but lack the head tracking feature. Furthermore, while the Momentum 5 Wireless ships with Bluetooth 5.4, the hardware is designed to support the upcoming Bluetooth 6.0 standard, with this upgrade also slated for a future firmware release. This forward-thinking approach ensures the headphones remain at the cutting edge of wireless audio technology.

The active noise cancellation has also received a significant overhaul. Sennheiser has equipped each ear cup with two additional microphones, bringing the total to four per side. The company claims these upgrades result in "across-the-board improvements," with the ANC being up to three times more effective at canceling out human voices. In addition to enhanced noise suppression, the new microphone array is expected to deliver "more natural voice quality on calls," a crucial feature for many users. These advancements aim to provide a more serene listening environment and clearer communication.

Battery life remains a strong suit, though slightly adjusted from the previous model. The Momentum 5 Wireless offers up to 57 hours of playback with ANC enabled, a modest reduction from the Momentum 4's 60 hours, but still offering extensive listening time. For those pressed for time, a quick charge feature provides approximately three hours of use from just a five-minute charge. A practical consideration for long-term ownership is the user-replaceable 700mAh battery, which can be swapped out with a small Phillips-head screwdriver. The Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless will be available in black, white, and blue color options starting June 16, 2026, priced at $400.
