Shokz Launches Lighter OpenFit Air 2 Earbuds for $130

Shokz has officially introduced its latest audio offering, the OpenFit Air 2 earbuds, a significant update to their existing model. These new earbuds boast a nearly 20 percent reduction in weight compared to their predecessors, tipping the scales at a mere 7.2 grams per unit, roughly equivalent to a few paperclips. This design adheres to Shokz's signature open-ear approach, which offers distinct advantages. By not forming a seal within the ear canal, users experience enhanced comfort and greater awareness of their surroundings, making them a compelling option for outdoor activities in urban environments. In fact, Shokz's open-ear earbuds have previously been recognized on lists of top headphones for runners.

While the open-ear design promotes comfort and situational awareness, there's a consideration for how the earbuds attach. They utilize an ear-hook mechanism, which, while ergonomically designed for extended wear, might pose compatibility issues with certain eyeglasses or hats. The company states that the OpenFit Air 2 earbuds will deliver "richer bass" and "fuller sound," employing Shokz's proprietary Bassphere audio driver and the OpenBass 2.0 algorithm. An angled speaker directs sound toward the ear for a more natural listening experience, complemented by an app offering four preset EQ modes and two custom profiles.

Enhanced Battery Life and Connectivity

Battery performance is another key upgrade for the OpenFit Air 2. Users can expect up to eight hours of playback on a single charge, with the included charging case extending the total listening time to 36 hours. For those times when a full charge isn't feasible, a quick 10-minute charge provides an additional three hours of playback. The earbuds integrate Bluetooth 6.1 technology, supporting multipoint connections for seamless switching between devices. The OpenFit Air 2 earbuds are scheduled to become available for purchase on August 27, with a retail price of $130.

Alongside the OpenFit Air 2, Shokz also announced the OpenRun Air 2 earbuds. These feature a distinctive design that wraps around the back of the head, prioritizing stability and minimizing bounce, particularly for athletic pursuits like running. Like the OpenFit Air 2, the OpenRun Air 2 models are lighter than their previous versions. They incorporate a bone conduction driver and also connect to the Shokz app for EQ adjustments. The battery life for the OpenRun Air 2 is rated at ten hours per charge, with a rapid five-minute charge yielding two hours of playback. These earbuds will also be released on August 27 and will be priced identically at $130.

The emphasis on lighter weight and improved audio drivers in both the Shokz OpenFit Air 2 and OpenRun Air 2 models highlights the company's commitment to refining its open-ear audio technology.
