Chinese augmented reality headset maker XREAL has officially launched a new sub-brand in China named XBX, introducing its most affordable XR glasses to date, the XBX A01. The new device, priced at CN¥1,799 (approximately $265 USD), aims to capture a budget-conscious segment of the market with features like a 50° field-of-view and HDR10 support.

The XBX A01 sports Sony micro-OLED displays and a bird bath-style optical design capable of delivering up to 1,600 nits of brightness. Weighing just 62 grams, the glasses are designed for consuming traditional content and are tethered to mobile devices, portable game consoles, and laptops. Unlike some of XREAL's flagship models, the A01 omits camera sensors and electrochromic dimming. It also forgoes the "Sound by Bose" audio, likely to maintain its aggressive pricing strategy.

Potential Trademark Hurdles Ahead

The launch of the XBX brand, particularly the name itself, raises questions about potential trademark conflicts, especially if XREAL plans to introduce the product line to Western markets. The name "XBX" bears a strong resemblance to Microsoft's well-known Xbox gaming console brand, which could lead to significant legal challenges. This situation echoes XREAL's past branding issues; the company, previously known as Nreal, was compelled to rebrand in 2023 after a trademark dispute with Epic Games over its "Unreal Engine" intellectual property.

While an English version of the XBX website exists, it currently lacks store links, leaving XREAL's broader intentions for the sub-brand unclear. It remains to be seen whether XBX will be a China-exclusive offering or the beginning of a global budget-friendly XR lineup. The company's aggressive push into the lower-cost casual XR glasses market comes at a pivotal time. XREAL is concurrently preparing to challenge the consumer AR market outside of China through Project Aura, a strategic partnership with Google that designates XREAL as Google's exclusive AR hardware collaborator.

This dual strategy – expanding affordable options domestically while simultaneously pursuing high-profile international collaborations – highlights XREAL's ambition to solidify its position across various market segments in the rapidly evolving XR market. The success of the XBX line, and its ability to navigate potential trademark disputes, will be a key indicator of XREAL's long-term growth trajectory.
