Galaxy S23 Global Update: One UI 8.5 Rolling Out with Android 16 Features
Samsung's One UI 8.5 stable update, based on Android 16, is now rolling out globally for the Galaxy S23 series. The update brings new customization and AI features.

Samsung has begun a worldwide rollout of its stable One UI 8.5 update for the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra. Initially launched in South Korea a few days ago, the update is now expanding to users in Europe and India, with a broader global release anticipated in the coming days. This significant update is built upon Android 16 and arrives with firmware version S91xBXXU9FZDP.
The download size varies, exceeding 4GB for non-beta testers and approximately 300MB for those who participated in the beta program. To check for the update, Galaxy S23 owners in eligible regions can navigate to Settings > Software update and select "Download and install." Once the download is complete, initiating the installation will require a phone restart and should be performed with at least 30% battery charge.
Enhanced Features and AI Integration
One UI 8.5 introduces a host of new functionalities, refined native applications, and a subtly refreshed design language. A key highlight is the fully customizable Quick Panel, allowing users to tailor their device's most-used settings. The Device Care menu has also been redesigned for a more intuitive user experience.
The update significantly upgrades Bixby, the company's virtual assistant. Bixby now boasts enhanced natural language understanding and integrates with Perplexity, enabling it to provide relevant online information directly within the assistant. A conversation history feature has also been added. Furthermore, the Galaxy AI-powered Photo Assist image editor now supports continuous image generation, offering more creative control for users.
Photography capabilities are further boosted with three new portrait filters for the camera system. The lock screen also receives attention, with an automatic wallpaper layout that intelligently adapts to placed widgets and on-screen elements. Users will find new animated wallpapers and expanded font styling options for lock screen clock widgets.
Additional enhancements include weather background effects for the alarm screen and a timezone converter integrated into the Clock application. Other notable additions are Direct Voicemail, Storage Share, Auto Hotspot, Family Device Sharing, improved Auracast features, and quick shortcuts for preferred Smart View devices. While the update focuses on numerous improvements, it notably does not include AirDrop-like functionality within Quick Share, a feature users may see in a future software release.
This rollout signifies Samsung's commitment to providing its flagship users with the latest software innovations. By basing One UI 8.5 on Android 16, Samsung ensures that Galaxy S23 users are among the first to experience the next generation of mobile operating system features and enhancements. The integration of advanced AI capabilities, particularly within Bixby and the photo editing tools, reflects a broader industry trend towards more intelligent and personalized smartphone experiences. The Galaxy S23 series, launched in early 2023, continues to receive substantial software support, extending its lifecycle and value proposition for consumers.
