Previously, Google Search primarily returned links to external websites, requiring users to click through to find information. For instance, if a user searches for "best way to plan a multi-day hike in Yosemite," the AI Overviews might provide a step-by-step plan, suggest gear, and even offer safety tips, pulling information from various reliable sources. This shift is powered by Google's latest advancements in its AI models, particularly Gemini.

This represents a significant strategic pivot for Google, aiming to retain its dominance in search amidst growing competition from AI-powered chatbots and newer search interfaces. While the company emphasized that links to websites would still be readily available and integral to the experience, the emphasis is on providing more immediate value and utility directly on the search results page.
