AI startup Nous Research, the creator of the open-source Hermes agent, is reportedly in final discussions to close a new funding round that would value the company at $1.5 billion. The round is expected to bring in at least $75 million, with Robot Ventures leading the investment, and significant participation from existing investor USV. Several individuals familiar with the ongoing negotiations confirmed the details. Nous Research has not yet commented on the funding talks, and neither have Robot Ventures nor USV responded to requests for comment.

Founded in 2023 by Jeffrey Quesnelle, Karan Malhotra, Ryan Teknium, and Shivani Mitra, Nous Research has already attracted substantial backing. Prior to this potential new infusion of capital, the company had successfully raised $70 million from a range of prominent investors, including Paradigm, North Island Ventures, OSS Capital, and Balaji Srinivasan, according to Crunchbase data.

AI Agents Gain Traction in Developer Tools

The company gained significant attention shortly after the viral success of Openclaw, another AI agent designed to perform tasks locally on a user's personal computer. Nous Research quickly followed with its own competitor, Hermes. A key differentiator for Hermes is its integrated set of pre-built capabilities, or "skills," encompassing functions like web searching, coding assistance, and image analysis. Furthermore, Hermes is engineered to learn from user interactions, enabling it to develop new skills autonomously without direct developer input.

In addition to its flagship agent, Nous Research has also developed specialized language models tailored for coding and mathematical tasks. Similar to other AI agents, Hermes empowers users to automate a variety of tasks. It facilitates interaction through chat interfaces and can deliver notifications within popular messaging platforms such as Telegram and Discord. This growing popularity stems from the ability of these AI tools to operate remotely and continuously, offering users 24/7 task execution and assistance.

The open-source nature of Hermes has contributed to its widespread adoption within the developer community. The project boasts an impressive following on GitHub, with approximately 214,000 stars and nearly 40,000 forks, indicating robust community engagement and contribution. Developers have the flexibility to run Hermes either on their local desktop machines or on a virtual private server for more demanding applications. For users seeking a more streamlined experience, Nous Research also provides a cloud-hosted version of Hermes. This hosted solution is available through a tiered subscription model, with monthly costs ranging from $20 to $200, offering a user-friendly alternative for those who prefer not to manage their own infrastructure.

Sources indicate that the proceeds from this new funding round will be strategically allocated to further enhance Hermes' existing product offerings and expand the company's overall business model. The investment signals strong investor confidence in Nous Research's technology and its potential to capture a larger share of the rapidly evolving AI agent market.
