Astronauts to Finish ISS Antenna Repair in Spacewalk
Two astronauts will venture outside the International Space Station on August 26, 2026, to complete the replacement of a critical space-to-ground antenna that failed during a previous mission.
Astronauts Anil Menon and Sophie Adenot are scheduled to conduct a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS) on August 26, 2026, to finalize the replacement of a key space-to-ground antenna. This crucial repair mission aims to restore high-speed communication links between the orbiting laboratory and Mission Control. The extravehicular activity (EVA) is slated to commence around 8:35 a.m. EDT and is expected to last approximately 6.5 hours. Live coverage of the spacewalk began earlier, at 7:00 a.m. EDT.
This marks the third spacewalk for NASA astronaut Anil Menon and the second for European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot. Adenot, who made history as the first French woman to perform an EVA, was involved in a previous attempt on August 18 to swap out the faulty antenna. While she and Menon successfully removed the damaged unit, time constraints prevented them from installing the new one. Beyond the primary goal of replacing the antenna, Menon and Adenot may also attempt a secondary task if time allows. NASA officials indicated that the astronauts could work to replace a retroreflector located on the forward port of the station's Harmony module. This component is vital for improving navigation data used by visiting spacecraft, ensuring safer and more precise docking maneuvers.
The International Space Station, a collaborative project involving multiple space agencies, has been a continuous human outpost in orbit since November 2000. The upcoming EVA will be the 283rd spacewalk conducted in its history. Astronauts Menon and Adenot will be designated as "crewmember 1" and "crewmember 2," respectively, for the operation.
Adenot arrived at the ISS in February as part of the SpaceX Crew-12 mission. Her crewmates on that mission include NASA astronauts Jack Hathaway and Jessica Meir, along with Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. Menon joined the station on July 14, traveling aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft alongside cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina. Menon's previous spacewalk experience includes an excursion on August 6 with Jessica Meir.
The successful replacement of the antenna is critical for maintaining robust communication channels.
