Perplexity AI has made its groundbreaking Personal Computer desktop application available to all Mac users, the company announced Thursday. This new application allows artificial intelligence agents to directly interact with local files, native applications, and web resources, enabling them to manage complex, multi-step personal workflows. The move signifies a major step in bringing advanced AI capabilities directly onto users' devices, moving beyond cloud-only solutions.

Personal Computer is an expansion of Perplexity's broader digital worker concept, which aims to create AI agents capable of performing tasks on behalf of users. Unlike earlier iterations that might have raised security concerns due to broad permissions, Perplexity claims its Personal Computer offers a more secure environment for AI-assisted computing. The goal is to harness the growing interest in local AI agents, inspired by tools like OpenClaw, while prioritizing user data protection.

Previously, access to Perplexity's Personal Computer was restricted to Perplexity Max subscribers and involved a waitlist. However, with the release of the new dedicated Perplexity Mac app, any user on a Mac can now try the software. While the app itself is free to download, the Personal Computer functionality requires a Pro or Max subscription tier.

Enhanced Local and Web Capabilities

The newly available software is designed to seamlessly integrate with a user's local files and native Mac applications. It also extends its capabilities to the web, acting as a versatile digital assistant. The system can orchestrate various tools and leverage over 400 connectors, drawing on personal context to complete tasks within a secure development environment hosted on Perplexity’s servers. When integrated with Perplexity’s Comet web browser, the Personal Computer can manage web-based tools without the need for dedicated connectors, streamlining online operations.

One of the key innovations of Perplexity's Personal Computer is its ability to operate autonomous agents on always-on devices, such as a Mac Mini. Furthermore, users can remotely access these agents from their iPhone, allowing them to initiate tasks or approve AI requests on the go. Perplexity envisions this capability being used for a wide array of professional tasks, including detailed work with spreadsheets, documents, and multifaceted projects.

The cross-application functionality is a significant feature, enabling AI agents to perform complex operations like comparing data across different files from separate applications or compiling notes from one program to draft content in another. This interconnected approach promises to boost productivity and efficiency for users engaging in intricate digital workflows. As a consequence of the widespread availability of this new app, Perplexity plans to phase out its older Mac application in the coming weeks to concentrate development efforts on the Personal Computer app.
