AI researcher Henk van Ess, for instance, showcased highly realistic deepfakes, including a simulated refugee camp situated along the U.S.-Mexico border and a depiction of a nuclear facility in Iran. Other users reportedly created AI images of a nonexistent flood and an event mirroring the 9/11 attacks.
Users' Misuse Prompts Rapid Removal
The widespread misuse of the generative AI tool led Google to halt its availability. A spokesperson for Google addressed the situation in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter. "We've seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes, however we've also seen people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies," the spokesperson said. "So we're rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails."
Google emphasized that the AI-generated images were watermarked and were never integrated into the public Google Earth experience. Despite these safeguards, the ease with which users could create and share controversial or misleading imagery proved to be an immediate concern.
