MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – Google kicked off its annual developer conference, Google I/O 2026, on Tuesday by highlighting significant integrations of its Gemini artificial intelligence into core products, most notably a reimagined Google Search experience. The company announced that Gemini AI will power new features within Search, promising to transform how users find information and manage tasks.

The centerpiece of the announcements is Google's vision for an AI-enhanced Search. Reid, a company representative, stated from the stage that "Google Search is AI search, through and through." The updated Search will feature an intelligent search box, described as "totally reimagined with AI." As users type, Gemini will offer suggestions to help formulate more precise questions, moving beyond traditional auto-complete. Users will also gain access to AI tools directly within Search, enabling queries through text, images, video, and audio. This rollout begins today.

One of the most striking demonstrations was the capability for Search to act as a personalized assistant. By integrating with services like Gmail, Photos, and Calendar, Search can now generate dynamic weekend planners. These planners dynamically suggest activities based on user preferences and calendar availability, even adjusting driving times and weather forecasts. For more complex, long-term projects, such as planning a wedding or managing a move, Search can create custom experiences, functioning akin to mini-applications. This includes building tools, trackers, and dashboards tailored to specific user needs. The system demonstrated an ability to build ideal formats for queries, offering dynamic layouts and visuals.

New Agentic Capabilities in Search

Further pushing the boundaries of AI assistance, Google announced new agentic capabilities for Search. These agents can be tasked with executing complex operations in the background. For example, a user could ask an agent to continuously monitor the web for specific biotech stocks matching certain criteria, sending notifications when predefined events occur. The demo illustrated the power of creating multiple agents simultaneously to handle various tasks, such as finding apartment listings based on detailed criteria or researching complex scientific topics like the effect of black holes on spacetime, where Search can provide dynamic visuals allowing users to alter parameters.

The concept of "Brain Dump" was also introduced, where users can convey their thoughts and ideas to AI agents, which then externalize, create, book, or purchase them. This represents a significant leap in how users can interact with technology to achieve desired outcomes with minimal manual input. Google emphasized that these agentic capabilities are designed to manage tasks efficiently and provide timely updates on ongoing processes.

The enhanced Search features are slated for release this summer, initially available for subscribers of AI Pro and Ultra. The announcement underscores Google's commitment to leveraging its advanced AI models like Gemini AI to redefine core user experiences and provide more intuitive and powerful digital tools. The integration aims to make information retrieval and task management more seamless and personalized than ever before.
