WWDC 2026: Apple Unveils Major Siri AI, iOS 27 Upgrades

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026 kicked off Monday, revealing a significant push into artificial intelligence, particularly for its long-standing Siri assistant. The company announced a major overhaul for Siri, incorporating Google's Gemini models to boost its conversational capabilities, visual intelligence, and overall responsiveness. This strategic integration aims to address user expectations in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. The new Siri will operate as a standalone application and be embedded across existing Apple software.

During the event, Apple Senior Vice President Craig Federighi emphasized the company's commitment to privacy in AI development. "We believe privacy in AI is non-negotiable," Federighi stated. He assured attendees that user data would be exclusively used for request execution and that external experts could continuously verify this promise. This privacy-centric approach is a cornerstone of Apple's strategy as it integrates more sophisticated AI functionalities into its ecosystem.

Beyond Siri, Apple unveiled a suite of new features under the umbrella of "Apple Intelligence." These enhancements span various applications, including improved tab management in Safari, one-tap password updates, and enhanced cross-app context awareness. The Messages app will offer AI-powered reply suggestions, while the Phone app gains the ability to pull context from other applications like Mail and Messages during calls. Apple confirmed its collaboration with Google's Gemini family of models to power these next-generation foundation models.

Evolving User Experience and Design

The conference also addressed user feedback on design elements, notably the "Liquid Glass" aesthetic introduced last year. Apple announced that users will have more options to customize or roll back certain aspects of this design, catering to diverse preferences. For app icons, a new layered approach to Liquid Glass was showcased, aiming to offer a more refined visual experience.

Image Playground, Apple's AI image generation tool, received a renewed focus, with the company highlighting its potential applications across various device features. Apple stressed that images generated using the app would not be used for training purposes, underscoring a commitment to user control. Performance updates accompanying the Apple Intelligence upgrades are expected to improve the tool's functionality.

iOS 27, the latest iteration of Apple's mobile operating system, is set to be its most widely available release yet, supporting devices from the iPhone 11 onwards. Apple claims significant performance boosts, including a 70% increase in photo appearance speed, 80% faster AirDrop transfers, and improved CPU scheduling for multitasking. These upgrades aim to deliver a smoother and more efficient user experience across a broader range of devices.

Parental controls are also receiving a substantial upgrade, offering parents more granular control over their children's device usage. New features allow parents to dictate call contacts, app access, and website permissions, with adaptive suggestions for restriction changes over time. Features like "Ask to Browse" and "Ask to Buy" will be enabled by default for children under 13.

Search functionalities across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS are being rebuilt from the ground up. Stacey Ford, vice president of OS Program Management, explained the motivation behind the overhaul: "We’ve all had that moment where you search for something you know is there, but it just won’t show up." The revamped Spotlight, Photos, and Mail search engines are designed to rectify these issues.

The Photos app is gaining new AI-powered editing tools, including "Reframe" to adjust image perspective and "Extend" to alter aspect ratios or expand scenes. The existing "Cleanup" tool will also be enhanced with generative AI for more realistic removal of distractions.

Apple is also introducing a new systemwide dictation feature built into the keyboard for iOS 27, capable of correcting spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. This move positions Apple to compete with popular AI dictation applications that offer similar text formatting and filler word removal.

The Shortcuts app will leverage AI for natural language creation, allowing users to generate scripts by simply describing their desired actions. This initiative aims to make the powerful tool more accessible to users without extensive technical expertise.

In the health sector, the Health app will introduce support for perimenopause and menopause tracking, expanding its existing cycle tracking features. This aligns with the growing market for digital health tools targeting women's health needs.

The WWDC keynote concluded with a farewell message from outgoing CEO Tim Cook. "Getting the best products in the world to deliver experiences that enrich people’s lives has always been our North Star," Cook reflected. "It’s been the honor of a lifetime to help advance that mission with teams whose creativity, care, and conviction continue to make a lasting difference in people’s lives."
