Apple announced Tuesday a new initiative, dubbed Apple Upgrade, that allows customers in the United States to lease eligible iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. This program, developed in collaboration with the 'buy now, pay later' provider Klarna, offers various leasing terms and monthly payment structures.

Under Apple Upgrade, consumers can choose from 12- and 24-month leasing periods for iPhones and Apple Watches. For Mac and iPad devices, the options extend to 24- and 36-month leases. Monthly payments are set to begin as low as $17.99 for an iPhone, $11.99 for an Apple Watch, $24.99 for a Mac, and $11.99 for an iPad. These competitive introductory prices aim to make Apple's latest technology more accessible.

The program also integrates with Apple Trade-In, enabling users to lower their monthly lease costs by trading in their current devices. At the conclusion of the leasing term, customers will have the flexibility to upgrade to the newest Apple model, purchase the device outright, or simply return it. This provides a structured pathway for consumers to stay current with technology.

Shifting Lease Options for Consumers

The introduction of Apple Upgrade marks a significant shift from Apple's previous financing models. The company will discontinue its long-standing iPhone Upgrade Program and iPhone Payments. These prior programs primarily offered 24-month, interest-free installment loans for iPhones, with the Upgrade Program additionally bundling AppleCare+ and a yearly upgrade option after 12 payments.

Apple's strategic pivot to a leasing model through Klarna comes amid a broader trend of consumers increasingly adopting 'buy now, pay later' (BNPL) solutions for their purchases. A recent Gallup survey indicated that approximately 51% of Americans have utilized installment plans for online shopping. While Klarna is widely recognized for its BNPL services, Apple Upgrade is specifically structured as a lease agreement, differentiating it from a typical loan product.

The accessibility of Apple's product line has always been a key factor in its market dominance. By offering leasing options, Apple aims to capture a wider demographic of users who may prefer predictable monthly expenses over outright ownership or traditional financing. This move could potentially boost sales volume and user retention by lowering the initial financial barrier to entry for new devices.

The Apple Upgrade program is currently available through Apple's official website and all U.S. Apple Store locations. Interested customers are encouraged to explore the terms and conditions to find the leasing option that best suits their needs and budget, facilitating a seamless acquisition of new technology.
