Apple has not yet finalized the color palette for its upcoming foldable iPhone, with a leaker suggesting black may not be among the initial options. The source, known as "Instant Digital" on Weibo, recently commented that Apple "hasn't even decided yet whether the foldable screen will come in black," questioning if the company has an aversion to the color. While this implies black is under consideration, its inclusion remains unconfirmed for a device slated for mass production imminently and a potential September 2026 launch.

Earlier reports from "Instant Digital" in February indicated the foldable iPhone would launch with only two color choices, one confirmed as white and the other unspecified. The leaker's May update did not alter these details, maintaining the two-option account. The latest comment introduces ambiguity regarding the second color, potentially differing from previous speculation.

Additional reports from Macworld, citing a supply chain source, suggest a second finish could be an indigo hue, similar to the iPhone 17 Pro's Deep Blue. This source also mentioned a classic silver and white model would be available, but anticipated fewer color choices compared to the iPhone 18 Pro series, with no vibrant or bold shades. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman echoed this sentiment, stating Apple intends to "stay away from fun colors" and will instead focus on more traditional finishes like silver/white and space gray/black.

Manufacturing Decisions and Color Choices

The decision on color options is directly tied to manufacturing and component procurement, processes that must be finalized well in advance of a product launch. For a device as complex and potentially supply-constrained as the foldable iPhone is expected to be, late-stage indecision on colors seems improbable. The rumor might instead reflect a degree of uncertainty within the supply chain regarding the final color choices. Thus far, only white dummy models of the device have surfaced publicly.

Historically, Apple has sometimes launched high-profile products with limited color variants. For instance, the Apple Watch Ultra and the Vision Pro debuted with a single color option. A restricted color selection for the foldable iPhone could be a practical manufacturing decision, especially given supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's warnings. Kuo has indicated that early yield and ramp-up challenges might constrain supply through at least the end of 2026. The commonly cited figure of 15 to 20 million units for production likely represents the total demand over the product's initial two to three years, not solely for 2026. Increasing the number of color variants complicates production, inventory, and allocation – complexities Apple may prefer to avoid when initial supply is expected to be scarce regardless.

This approach aligns with Apple's strategy for previous significant launches. The original iPhone X, released in November 2017, was available in only two colors: Silver and Space Gray, at a then-record starting price of $999. The subsequent iPhone XS introduced a Gold option. Apple might adopt a similar phased approach to expanding color choices for its foldable device over time. With a projected starting price that Mark Gurman indicates will "cross the $2,000 threshold," the foldable iPhone is unlikely to appeal primarily to consumers driven by color preferences. This financial positioning provides Apple the latitude to maintain a narrow initial color palette.

The first foldable iPhone is anticipated to be unveiled in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models.
